Allan B. Chinen, M.D. is Clinical Professor of Psychiatry
at the University of California, San Francisco, and in private practice
in San Francisco. He has lectured extensively and presented numerous
workshops on the role of myths, fairy tales and legends on our life
stories--the scripts we live out. He is the author of the following
books:
Once upon a Midlife, presents a collection of folktales from around the world focusing on men and women at midlife, and their intertwined developmental tasks.
Beyond the Hero, is an anthology of folk stories specifically about men and what might be called the deep masculine at midlife -- "Brother Lustig" is discussed at length here.
Waking the World, focuses on folktales about women at midlife, and how they reverse the "Sleeping Beauty" theme: instead of the prince awakening the helpless princess, it is the queen who must awaken the king, who is unconscious because of some spell.
In the Ever After, finally, reclaims many forgotten and overlooked stories about "old" protagonists, revealing the psychological and spiritual tasks of the last third of life.
