Cat Care
At the Animal Clinic of North Park, we strongly believe in preventative medicine.  We recommend the following services to maintain your pet's health and well being.

Comprehensive Physical Exam
There are several disorders that are relatively easy to treat if detected in the early stages.  These include dental disease, ear infections, tumors, eye disorders, heart disease, and respiratory disorders.  To ensure your pet's health, we recommend a wellness exam once every six months.

Internal Parasite Testing
Fecal Test: Your pet's feces should be tested for internal parasites once a year.  Several types of internal parasites can affect your pet's health and, in some cases, the health of your family.
Heartworm Test: Cases of heartworm are on the rise in San Diego.  This parasite is transmitted by mosquitoes, and should be tested for once a year.  This is done through a blood test, and a monthly heartworm preventative is recommended.

Vaccines
Vaccines are given every 6 months.  Following this schedule helps to reduce adverse reactions.
FVRCP:  Feline viral rhinotracheitis, calicivirus, and panleukopenia (distemper)
Feline Bordetella: The feline version of the vaccine for “kennel cough”

Then six months later...
FeLV:  Feline leukemia
FIP:  Feline infectious peritonitis
Rabies:  This vaccination is recommended for all cats that may go outdoors.  For animals that receive this vaccination before they are a year old, the booster is required again the next year.  If your pet receives the rabies vaccination after he/she is a year old, the booster is required again in three years.

Other Recommended Services
Microchip Implant: This identification chip is used by animal shelters, humane societies, and veterinary offices nationwide should your pet become lost.
Advantage Flea Control: This medication kills 98-100% of fleas within the first 12 hours.  Each treatment lasts four weeks.
Spay/Neuter: This service is highly recommended for all pets not destined for breeding.  It helps reduce aggression and territory marking in males, and reduces the risk of fatal breast or prostate cancer.  Additionally, it helps reduce the rising population of pets in animal shelters and humane societies.
Golden Years Health Screening: Is your pet seven years old or older?  Your pet's longevity and quality of life can be helped by this in depth evaluation that includes x-rays, blood testing, and electrocardiogram.  Please ask us for further details.
