Bloggin it:
3/2/09: Unfortunately, Wondercon was most likely the worst con we ever had - more so than Heroescon. I guess its the sign of the hope and change world we now live in that people weren't spending. At least the sketchbooks sold well with #5 now completely sold out. Nevertheless, I have a good time hanging out with friends and eating some of the finest food that San Francisco has to offer - and there is a heck of a lot of it here.
02/10/09: Well miracle of miracles. While hunting through boxes trying to get ready for Wondercon I found a small stock of Sketchbook #5. For everyone who's been asking about older books here's your chance. I plan on taking a few of these to Wondercon so the scumbag dealers can get a hold of them to resell on e-Bay. But, I'll keep a few on hand for you fans. BTW...the NFR gang will be at Wondercon in San Francisco on Feb 27 - 28 and March 1. So you'll have in one spot in Artist Alley: Arthur Adams, Joyce Chin, J Scott Campbell, Michael Golden, Dave Johnson, Matt Wagner and Mark Texeira. CAN YOU DIG IT!
11/14/08: Finally they're here. Jeff just sent me a good supply of the "Faces" Sketchbook and the "Code Orange" Hardback book that were both released this year at Comic-Con. See the new J Scott Campbell link below for more info. Arthur Adams Sketchbook #5 is sold out - yeah!
10/22/08: Well, I put in the applications for NFR to attend Wondercon on Feb 27, 28 and March 1. The NFR gang will be set up in artist alley like usual and here's who you are going to get: Arthur Adams, Joyce Chin, Michael Golden, Matt Wagner, J Scott Campbell and Dave Johnson (with special guest Bruce Timm). So forget about going to that stinky old Megacon and come enjoy the best talent in the industry in one of the most beautiful cities in the world - San Francisco (also know as the largest outdoor insane asylum in the world).
10/21/08: I learned a new game! Its called screw the artist using PayPal. Here's how it works. A customer buys something from me using PayPal with the cheapest shipping option possible, i.e. no delivery confirmation. After a period of time the customer places a claim against me on PayPal saying they never got the item. Despite me having a postal receipt proving I sent the item, PayPal sides with the buyer and hits my account for a refund. No discussion, no pleading, no choice all because I can't provide a tracking number. My artist loses food on the table because of some childishly greedy jerk. So, policy from here on out is that delivery confirmation charges are going to be required on everything bought. Unfortunately its all coming down to one bad apple affecting the tree. Why did I say screw the artist? Because I don't make nutin out of this biz - the money goes to the artist and that's what they live on. Recalling the movie "Fist Full of Dollars" I remember the scene with Joe (Clint Eastwood) telling the desperados he's camping out with before shooting them to fake out the Morales. Joe says, "You insulted my horse. Now I don't mind you insulting me so much. But, my horse, you see, has feelings and I'm real partial to my horse and his feelings." Baboom!
9/3/08: The times are getting stranger by the minute. There of a sudden seems to be a dearth of requests for me to sell AA sketchbooks 1 - 4. I thought it obvious but here goes: Sold Out, don't have them, gone, zip, nada. Your only resort is to buy them from supposed fans who are posting them to e-Bay for stupid prices.
8/16/08: They're finally here: I now have a supply of Arthur Adams Sketchbook #7 in stock. Glad to see that the scumbag dealers have been getting good money for them on e-Bay.
8/4/08: Well, It would appear that I was not clear in my below discussion. So, for your ease here it is again -
I don't have in stock at this time:
Arthur Adams Sketchbook #7
J Scott Campbell Faces Sketchbook
J Scott Campbell Code Orange
I'll post when they become available. From all the queries I've gotten its pretty obvious no one read, let alone understood, what I wrote below.
7/30/08: Well, I'm back from the show and it was the biggest and craziest ever. I took a day off yesterday to just collapse and stare at the wall. Working the NFR booth at the con isn't an easy job - extremely early morning set up, sales and artist care all day including erratic lunches, if at all: occasional stops to relieve myself after holding on for hours only to be greeted by sty like conditions in the restroom followed by extremely late dinners. Its not glamour work, but if any of you are delusional enough to think I'm lying then go try it yourself. The one twist this year was that J Scott Campbell was not with us. JSC did a last minute table change, which none of us blame him for. This situation was really the fault of the con organizers. Its not worth going into details but rest assured Jeff will be with us next year for sure.
Book sales for Sketchbook 7 exceeded our expectations. We sold out of all I had shipped to the show. So, when you see the inevitable dealer bullshit on e-bay about being sold out, do yourself a favor, don't believe it. Speaking of dealer scum - I see the plethora of sketchbooks up and getting double and triple price. What can I say. This years book was a real trauma. Arthur didn't give me the last piece until Sunday prior to the show. I worked until 11:30pm to get it set up. Then got to my regular job, which I wake up at 5am to arrive at 7:30, then half day vacation to run to the printer. We weren't quite sure we'd get the books in time for the show. In fact, they didn't come until Friday by next morning overnight FedEx. I don't expect to make much if anything for Arthur on this one since our production costs are extremely high. I had no choice but to sell multiple copies to dealer scum just to ensure that we wouldn't be in the red. It still hurts that in a sense someone who had not sweated and bled over its production benefits greatly. But, the mere existence of the books makes Arthur happy, so QED.
Well, now for the stuff you really care about: I have none of J Scott Campbell's 2008 books and prints. So, everyone needs to check out Jeff's website at www.jscottcampbell.com for further information. For the time being Jeff wants to bring product to fan expo. He'll then decide whether he wants to sell through a Yahoo store or through me. For you rumor mongers, its not that I have done a bad job for him, its just a matter of logistics and a bit of Jeff trying to spare me an enormous amount of work. Unlike many other dealers out there this whole thing is not an ego adventure for me or by any means financially lucrative. I'm only here to accommodate friends without taking undue advantage for myself. Unfortunately, that's an all too rare quality these days but somehow it makes waking up and looking at myself in the mirror all that much more palatable. A few of you dealers reading this ought to take note.
As to Arthur's books, I will have those soon. The printer is shipping the balance of the order to my home. Then, I have to have Arthur sign them. Once that is all done, I'll post the availability here. PLEASE don't e-mail me about availability before then or whining to me about reserving copies for you. I will have more than enough for everyone who wants them. In fact, you won't even have to pay the stupid dealer scum e-bay prices. They will be priced at $20 - with a bit more if you want to use PayPal. Sorry, that's the cost of business. I'm not trying to be a huge dick about this stuff. I want fans to be happy. Its just that I'm slowing down in my old age and need a bit more time to enjoy life. Plus, I have a real day time job that pays a mortgage that being an art dealer could never hope to match nor should if you are honest. Additionally, my dad recently died and its caused me to look at the world a bit differently, i.e. life is short, enjoy it while it lasts. No, I'm not going to use this forum to set up a long sweeping memorial. I'll stack my father against any of your heroes as one of the greatest men to ever have walked this earth. But, understatement was his way - and mine.
