Nice Russian icon of St.Sergei of Radonezh
$350
St.Sergei (died in 1392) was one of the purest lights of Russian spirituality,
he became patron saint
of the Moscow Principality during the 15th
century. He was the leading figure of the monastic
revival which took place during the period
of Tartar occupation. In the pre Mongol period,
monastic communities were generally based
on cities. Sergei, whose asceticism emphasized labor,
humility and mystical contemplation, was an
exponent of the hermit life and founded his Monastery
of the Holy Trinity in the remote forest.
After his death many other monasteries were founded by
his disciples in what amounted to virtual
colonization of the North Russian wilderness. Sergei was
also the first instigator of resistance to
Tartar over lordship; he was a close advisor of the sainted
Metropolitan Alexei of Moscow and of the Moscow
Prince Dmitry Donskoy, the victor over the
Tartars at the field of Kulikovo in 1380.
The historic name of the monastery and hamlet was
ironically changed to Zagorsk to honor a bolshevik
sailor (Zagorsky) who played a major role in the
storming and suppression of the monastery
in the early days of the Soviet regime.
