This book is just out in Moscow, in Russian and English in parallel columns on the same page. Terms that are impossible to
translate are given in Chechen. The volume combines a life worth of research with a wealth of illustrations and reference
material. Spanning the period from the Greeks, it opens up parts of the Chechen heritage that have never been dealt with before
in academic circles. There are photographs, drawings, reproductions of paintings, plots, diagrams, eyewitness reports, memoirs
and extracts from novels and poems. All this should win the hearts of the reading public as well as the wits of historians and
ethnologists. Askhabov's book contains 240 pages and over 200 illustrations. The site www.chechnyafree.ru offers a list of
contents and extensively samples the book. Visitors are welcome to contact Isa Askhabov and place E-mail orders for copies
with him. Doctor of History E.G.Astvatsaturyan, of Moscow's State Historical Museum, wrote a preface to this book: "Isa
Askhabov's work consists of a brief introduction, a short outline of Chechnya's history, a description of the early arms, the loss
of material and cultural monuments in military and historical upheavals. The greater part of his work is a detailed account of
sword and dagger blades made and seen around Chechnya in the 17th-19th centuries based on both literary sources and the
information the author collected in his travels around villages and heard from the craftsmen's descendants who keep up national
traditions… Before this work was written, our knowledge of the subject was scant. Archives contain almost no information on
weapon smiths. The section entitled "Main Arms Production Centers" is simply unique. In it the author accomplished something
no one ever did before - he gleaned from discussions with the locals and from existing literary sources, information on craftsmen
who were active there in the 17th-20th centuries…Thus, there was a giant hiatus which Isa Askhabov undertook to fill during
the 1990's which proved so difficult for the Chechen people. Reading his book one begins to realize how important it is to be
an enthusiast. Between the wars, he traveled from village to village trying to learn something about the craftsmen who once
worked there. Fortunately, every Chechen knows the names of his or her ancestors way back to at least seven generations,
and the descendants of old craftsmen told him of their ancestors, some of whom lived, they said, as long ago as in the 17th or
18th centuries… Scholars knew the names of only 14 weapon makers before Isa Askhabov undertook his research. He added
148 names to the list. Now the number of Chechen weapon makers on the list is 162 (or 180, if we add those from the 1886
list). He also discovered six stamping trademarks heretofore unknown to scholars but which used to be widely known in the
18th and 19th centuries. It is difficult to overestimate the importance of this work. The names of craftsmen together with the
trademarks they used will help to determine the makers of some exhibits in our museums. Reading the manuscript of this book
while it was even in its early stages, enabled us to attribute one of the daggers in the stocks of the State Historical Museum to
Makhmad, a craftsman who lived in the Chechen aul of Dzhugurta. Isa Askhabov's book will contribute to studying the history
of the Chechen people and old arms…" E.G. Astvatsaturyan, Cand. Sc. (History) Senior Research Fellow State Historical
Museum (Moscow) The following is Askhabov's vision, in the introductory chapter, of what he is up to in his new book:
"…Gone are the times of sabers, daggers, flintlock firearms. Today, they are precious heirlooms, evidence of the exquisite skills
of Caucasian, Chechen makers of weapons and goldsmiths. As a means of defense and a harmonious part of the national dress
of the mountaineers, as well as of their poetical image, sabers, daggers and firearms were at the same time fine works of
applied art and jewelry-making. Weapons as gifts were also tokens of friendship. Leo Tolstoy was friendly with the Chechen
Sado Misirbiyev until his death. The saber Misirbiyev presented him with is in the Leo Tolstoy Museum now. Giving a dagger
or a saber as a present, exchanging weapons in the Caucasus used to mean making peace. A custom worthy of being carried
on, now…"
