When having sex with fish, make an effort to avoid
the candirú . A member of the genus Vandellia,
it is called the urethra fish in English. The
candirú swims into the urethra, possibly attracted
by the urine of swimmers bathing in the Amazon.
It then spreads the spines on its gill covers,
which makes it especially difficult to remove.
Its presence in situ can cause severe pain,
bleeding, and inflammation. Once the fish is stuck
in the urethra, local natives have been known to
amputate the penis as a method of ending the attack
and relieving the discomfort.

This has been a public service announcement from
