Let us introduce our home to you:
We live in Zimbabwe, a
country in Southern Africa, bordering on South Africa, Botswana, Zambia and
Mozambique.
Vimbainesu
means “you can count on us.” The home is
built on communal land about 1 hour outside of Harare. Many feel it has become a model orphan
community, incorporated into the
surrounding rural area. The home itself is built to look and
function just like many other African living arrangements. There are 6 round huts built in a large
circle around a central hut. In each of
the 6 huts live 3 children. The Central
Hut if the place for the “Parents” of the Orphanage. All the cooking and communal activities take place in the central
hut. This model of a traditional
African family style housing arrangement works well for the children of
Vimbainesu. They grow up like their
classmates in the village, they are part of their own
culture, and when they
become adults they are well prepared for life in rural Zimbabwe. But in the meantime there is time for
learning and play….
Unfortunately Vimbainesu is only
the tip of an iceberg. The World Health
Organization and UNAIDS estimate that due to the ever increasing AIDS epidemic
in Southern Africa, approximately 600,000 orphans live in Zimbabwe. Most are still taken care of by
"extended family support systems."
