International Brotherhood of Magicians Ring 38
San Francisco, CA October 1998

1. Welcome: Our Vice President, Dennis Fox called the September meeting to order.

2. Glyndon Smith Item: The secretary (myself) received a final box of magical apparatus from the executor of Mr. Glyndon Smiths' estate. It was opened at the meeting and found to contain a custom made "Mailbag Escape" illusion complete with leather restraints and chains. It was auctioned off as a curiosity as Mr. Smith was MUCH smaller than the average Ring 38 magician.

3. Jim Fassbinder was the Ring 38 Representative this year to the Annual Oakland Magic Circle Spaghetti feed and Magic Competition. For those who missed it it was a real treat. There were performers table hopping before the show , clowns , balloons, and everything you could need to get the crowd ready for a great night of magic. Tom Cutts was the M.C. for the night and did a admirable job. The show had 4 contestants. Jim Fassbinder-Ring 38, presented a fast paced and very entertaining mentalism routine. Gerald Joseph-Sam 112, presented a manipulations routine that was well thought out and fun to watch. Chin-Chin-S.F. Conjurers, presented a manipulation routine with a beautiful segment that featured a rose( he is only 16). Bendini and Danger HaHa-OMC, presented a very original routine that was a story that featured magic. The winner was Chin Chin, second was Gerald Joseph, and third our own Fassbinder. Congratulations to all of the contestant and thank you for a wonderful evening.

4. The "San Francisco Ghost Hunt" with Fassbinder is just in time for Halloween! You will visit some of San Francisco's most notorious haunted places, and meet the ghosts that call them home. Hear ghost stories based on documented research, see eerie ghost magic performed right before your eyes, learn how to catch a ghost yourself, and enter a delightfully spooky real haunted mansion. Walk just over a mile in an hour and a half through a safe comfortable neighborhood.

Halloween is right around the corner and entertaining with magic goes hand-in-hand with All Hallow's Eve. Haunted houses, fortune tellers, and the down right weird, all come out and so should you. If you're trick-or-treating with the kids, bring some flash paper - forget the trick; just light it and throw it in the air and the crowds will be amazed, and the thumb tip can make candy disappear faster than an 8 year old. I'm sure you have your favorites, just make them fast and flashy; this also keeps you moving and from getting tied down to do "one more".

If you're home doling out the candy, you can afford to take a little more time and be a little more creative - maybe even use a bit of the old invisible thread. Just remember to keep these short and fast also - keep the kids moving and the crowds happy.

If you're going out to a party, have your pockets full and ready to demonstrate the power of this night ... just remember that a lot will be going on and it will definitely be hard to keep peoples' attention. Make it fast and entertaining and they're sure to remember you.

Whatever your situation - have fun, be safe, and magical!
