LOS ANGELES - Carlos Guitarlos, once a member of the hard-living '80s LA club band Top Jimmy and the Rhythm Pigs and more recently playing on the streets of San Francisco, was celebrated by the City Council on Friday as one of Los Angeles' homegrown treasures.
Councilman Eric Garcetti called Guitarlos "one of the great icons not only of Los Angeles music but music in the United States." Council President Alex Padilla cited Guitarlos as an example of "what's great about Los Angeles."
"I was born and raised in LA and I know every shortcut in town, so thank you very much," the graying, bearded musician said. "And it's good to see things about electric cars, and the wetlands and the culture clash - a whole lot of culture here today.
"I'm part of LA, I always have been, I always will be. ... The music is straight from my heart, but it's straight from you guys too."
