| This is Bill's dad, John, trying to get the Holt out of a
slough in the Sutter Basin area of northern California in 1915. The angle of the Holt made
it impossible to use the engine because reverse was too fast and the fan drive was in the
mud. So he chained a bridge timber to the back of both tracks for something solid to
anchor to, then wrapped a rope around the open flywheel four or five turns and pulled it
out with a horse walking in line with the flywheel. It took some time but it worked! |
