Section One - Commentary and Current Articles April 1st - Spring is here, but the temperatures have been on the cool side. Enough of the 50's.....I am ready for temps in the 60s and, better yet, those wonderful 70s. It makes for a wonderful time of the year when the temperature stays in a range between 70-79. I have been waiting for decent weather to start a regular program of bike riding on our wonderful bike trails in Contra Costa County. As I have mentioned earlier, I have lost all that great conditioning that I had built up from riding my bike last fall("use it or lose it" is the principal when you are talking about physical conditioning). Yesterday, I decided to try a bike ride with a group as announced in the Sunday CC Times Outdoor Calendar. It was a 27 miles jaunt from Heather Farms to San Ramon mostly on the Iron Horse Trail. Well, I joined the group when they came by my place on the trail at Mt. Diablo Blvd. Grey Whipple, the leader, took me by the hand and we took a slower pace than the approximately 25 other bikers, who went at a faster pace. I did make the trip to San Ramon where we met at a deli for lunch, but let the group go ahead while I rested and had my lunch. I then proceeded back at my own pace. The only problem coming back was a cold head wind! I hadn't realized that we were helped by a tail wind on the way down; which became a "cold chilly" March wind on the way back. I was glad I had dressed for cold weather. I must apologize to the other bikers for joining them before I was in condition to handle the distance.
As we approach the new millennium, new breakthroughs in medical treatment, as well as, new drugs, are being developed at an increasing rate. Now the new research on genes and mapping of the DNA of the human body promises even more dramatic breakthroughs in the years ahead. We here in Contra Costa County are located in the middle of this research with the world's third largest publicly funded push to uncover the secrets of the human body. A new facility in Walnut Creek's Shadelands Business Park will house 150 researchers from Lawrence Livermore and Lawrence Berkeley laboratories. They will expose the pattern of genes that determine everything from our hair color to our tendency toward certain diseases, such as diabetes, asthma and schizophrenia.
But, maybe I am behind times, because I am still waiting for a simple program to readily analyze the vitamin and mineral content of the daily foods we eat. I still find it amazing that our doctors will spend the precious little time we get on our yearly medical exams on the simple tests they do perform, without nearly a reference to our diets and the foods we eat.
Now there are some software programs available that will perform this analysis of our diet, but the process of entering the data takes a lot of time. What I would like to see are more programs showing various typical diets and then; the analysis of all the vitamins and minerals in each of the diets. In my own case, I have spend much time looking at each vitamin and mineral; then looking for the foods to supply the RDA of each of those foods. I feel that I am getting all of the essential nutrition my body needs and this gives me a feeling of assurance whenever I read those stories about how we are failing to get proper nutrition.
I have used many different sources to compile the data needed to analyze my diet, but the most healthful source was a paperback book named:
"Food Values of Portions Commonly Used" by Jean A. T. Pennington, Ph.D, R.D. my edition published in 1989. This book has the "complete nutrient content of calories, cholesterol, salt, fats, vitamins, and that all-important nutrient, dietary fiber, plus much more---of all the foods you eat."
