We now have a place to ask questions about all those idiot problems that come up with using a computer. Most of them have easy answers, if someone has run across it already. We can help each other with answers. If we will just take the time to use our Forum, it can be a valuable resource to all of us. On the other hand, if no one uses it then we all lose. So click your way to the Forum and check out messages under Topics for Internet and Computers:

Web Sites to help on computer problems
Section One - Commentary and Current Articles Commentary - One of these days I will need to get a new computer system. I have decided that, instead of transferring all the files from my old computer to the new one, I will wait until the new technology for connecting multiple home computers is perfected. That way, hopefully, I will be able to keep all my files on the old computer; and then use the new computer to handle the Internet and procedures requiring more RAM, Mhz, and or, modem speed. Just this last week, a new IPO was launched on Friday called TUT Systems, which happens to be located in Pleasant Hill, just below Wards. I had read about this company and decided to visit their offices the day their IPO opened. Well, the opening price was set at 18, and the closing price that day was in the fifties. This means that some of the people had become literally millionaires that morning. Needless to say, there was a lot of excitement in the air at their offices.
What is interesting is their product which is setting up network solutions for industry and general business. In addition, they do have a product called: HomeRun for use in the home for connecting computers inside the home. Now this is a HOT product area. The right system can provide answers to most of my connection problems between desktops, laptop, and various other computer accessories.
I will be keeping an eye on this new stock, as well as the company's products. It's symbol is HOTS. Microsoft has a 10% ownership in this new venture, so it must have something going for it.
Some Help for Those New to Spreadsheets and Databases
I taught myself Microsoft Excel by buying books and just slowly increasing my knowledge of the program. Now Excel is absolutely my favorite software program. I use it, of course, as a spreadsheet; but I also find Excel to be my best filing cabinet for all sorts of data and information. I also use it as a word processor in most of my document creation functions. Actually, I seldom use Microsoft Word, except when I type a letter(now who does that anymore?) I came across some interesting data from Indiana University that provide help for students new to databases and spreadsheets. I am sure other universities have some similar help sites on such programs, too. If you are new to these type of programs, take some time to check out the following sites:
Great Home PCs - Review by PC Magazine
My favorite overall pc magazine has done a really good job of displaying data on comparing the latest computers. They requested two types of PCs from select home PC vendors:
- units meant for high-volume sales with target prices at about $1,500
- high-end home systems priced at about $2,500
Both types include monitor and Win98
Note: For this story they did not look at sub-$1,000 PCs and cautioned that savvy buyers should be wary of the compromises inherent in such units
Another good feature of their review was the specific comparison of all tested units in the following areas. This way you can readily compare the features of all units in the specific area of your concern:
- Basic features
- Multimedia and Communication features
- Integrated Software features included
- Setup, Service and Support features
PC Magazine: Home PCs (12/15/98)
Windows Magazine: 15 Problems That Plague Your PC And How to Solve Them - April 1999

Our December selections:
Here is an article that many of our active seniors will appreciate. I find from our computer club meetings at SIR that several of our members have older systems. I think that some were engineers in their careers and like the challenge of tinkering with their computer systems. This article and PC World Magazine generally is a good source of information for upgrading your computer:
PC World Online December 1998: Cover Story - - The Seven Smartest PC Upgrades for Under $200Microsoft Press Online: Computer Technology - Books & Resources - Learning & Training
Macmillan Publishing USA--Good source of new technical book info
Investing: US - Welcome from The Mining Co.
Section Four - Computer Tip Links I am starting a feature this month to try showing the latest tips for getting around on a computer. Right now the tips will range between hardware, software applications, etc. There will be a separate listing for Internet tips on that page. Let me know your favorite tips and be sure to send questions that deal with common problems in the use of a computer and\or software application
WIN 98 - Stand-By Mode
I have found this feature on WIN 98 "Shut Down" selections to be very useful. Generally, I am on and off the computer during the day. By using stand-by mode, I can save energy and the computer is still just a click away from opening with my application on the toolbar ready to go.
How to Hook Up a New Hard Drive
You can tell from my opening comments that I have been battling the HD space problem. If you are running out of room on your hard drive, you might be interested in a description of how to add a second harddrive to your system.
