Section One - Commentary and Current Articles April 1st - It's official....you can now reach this site by typing in www.aloke.com in your URL locator. On some pages, you just type it into the Location box that shows your current url address at top of your screen. Try it and let me know if you have any problems.
Incidentally, while I think about it; you might want to consider signing up for your own family URL.
We are definitely entering a new age where your identity will be determined by your url address. Right now a email address is the popular thing to have, but in the future your family will prize the ownership of a key URL. This becomes more important for people with popular last names like Smith, etc. True, there will be new domains established for using names, but there will be nothing like claiming the rights to a .COM extension. It does cost you $70.00 for the first two years and you must renew your ownership every two years?
If you think you or someone in your family would be interested in claiming a family URL of your own, just go to underlined title below. All you need to do is follow the instructions to see if the name you pick out is still available:
April 1st - We all like a bargain and this web site promises a good one. How about free Internet access? Of course, the first question you probably have is: "How about local phone access?" Well, I checked out their listing of numbers for our local area and found listings for Concord, Danville and San Ramon(This is very important! You do not want to pay the bill if you will be charged for phone service on a time basis!)If you find that you do have local access then you might want to check it out. I am pretty well committed to Pacbell with my web site, so I really don't need it right now. But with the site's wide coverage area all across the country, it could be a great way to check in while traveling. Be sure to read the fine print to know what you will be agreeing to in the conditions. Obviously, they will be using your personal data to sell to advertisers and you will be getting lots of advertising while surfing their site. I would like to get some feedback if you register and download their software. I have read about this site in a couple of publications and I expect it to be legitimate. Here is a link to the web site:
NetZero "FREE" Internet Connection Services
Update March 1st - I seem to be going in ten different directions right now, with setting up all the new links necessary for my new format. It will take a good couple of months for me to get a handle on some of my news features and content setups. So be patient with me and I think you will see a better more informative web site here in the next couple of months. Thanks for your understanding, Allan.
I now have my own domain URL
Sounds like I have been crowned king!.... but actually I have decided to put in my claim for my own web name. As long as I pay the yearly fees, it will be mine for as long as I want it. No one else will be able to use the name. My domain name is "aloke.com". Now the question is: "How do I put it into service". Under this existing site, PacBell provides space for this web page under their web site. It would cost me $125-250 a month to set up my own URL using aloke.com. I cannot afford that amount of money in putting up this community service web site. So, give me a couple of months to see if I can come up with satisfactory answers to getting my own web page.
They say: "you don't get anything for free in this world" but the Internet might be changing the rules. I tried this new site offering "free Internet" with a minimum of restrictions. You need to download their program to register and get signed up for the free service. I went through the process of downloading the file; only to get a message that the file couldn't be found AFTER THE DOWNLOAD WAS COMPLETE. I have had this message before, and still can't figure out what happens to the downloaded file? Anyway, you might want to check it out for yourself. I got the site from a reliable computer magazine, so expect it to be a legitimate site.
Let me know if you are able to get online with this site. I could use an alternate web access source, to reduce the pressure of working with 150 hours maximum allowed on PacBell Access. Now click on the underlined title below:

I came across some informative sites for persons new to the Internet. I have been on the Internet so long, I begin to think I am a veteran, but actually; this new technology in our lives is evolving so fast that nobody can really make that statement...... we are all pioneers in a wonderful new world.

Incidentally, I read about a new utility that can help us all with those "download blues." We have all spent too much time downloading new programs, utilities, etc. only to be cutoff before the download is completed....and then you have to start all over again! Well, this program is designed to take over your downloads. If there is an interruption in the download and it isn't completely downloaded; the program will keep the portion that was downloaded and you can start from that point...A real benefit where you are downloading a program taking 2-3 hours. I haven't had time to check it out, but here is the web site to get info and the download product. If anyone gets it I would like a report.

Here is an example of a "Portal" web site which is the hot subject of web browsers these days. In my own case, just give me all the search engines and an umlimited file for bookmarks for my favorite sites; and I will do my own searching. However, that is not to say that such portals are not helpful. They all go about categorizing subjects by broad subject mater, and then offering the best links(in their opinion.) Too often this turns out to be sites in which they are paid for directing traffic to certain sites. John Dvorak, computer columnist, has come up with his own Personal Portal that you will find of interest. Just click on the underlined title below:
