Current Compositional Projects

Sound Portraits:   Tape pieces in collaboration with artist Tammy Nguyen's abstract portraits. Two movements have been completed and one or two more will finish the project.  The music and paintings can stand alone as independent art works or appear together.  A motivation for the project is the assumptions people make about others based on the sound of their voices; gender, age, education, culture, economic status, etc. Anticipated completion date:  January 2007.

Mourning and Loving:  Two movements for prepared piano and tape: 1) You; 2) Post Party. The movements can be performed together or separately. The first movement takes the spoken word "you" and manipulates it electronically; the pianist may also say, sing, and/or shout the word. You examines what and who is mourned, a friend, a love, a dream, a time;  2) Post Party: for prepared piano and tape. The piece is a musical rumination of a recently acquired friendship, which, despite its newness, the cultural and life experience differences of the participants, and their current geographical distance from each other, is a deep and abiding one. The musical mediums provide the outlets for the personalities of the two friends to develop individually, while allowing them to intermingle. It is also an examination of how language learning expands cultural understanding, which is critical to peaceful co-existence.
