Music Quotations of the Month:

EVENT SCHEDULING
Nancy Waidtlow keeps the FFS calendar so we don’t double up on events. Our organization is not as large as that of more populous folk communities where they can book song circles, story telling, concerts, films and dances all on the same night. And we try to coordinate with the Fresno Filmworks because we draw from the same audience. So if you have an idea for a special folk occasion phone Nancy at 224-1738 or email her to get on the calendar.

Concert News with Pat Wolk
UPCOMING CONCERTS:
Hans York & Young Amelia
May 10, 7:30 pm at Fresno Art Museum’s Bonner Auditorium
Featuring Eva Scow, Dusty Brough, Myra Joy & Special Guests including Karen Marguth & Kevin Hill. This is one concert you will not want to miss.
Wherever he goes, Hans works to build a community of musicians. That is evident on his latest CD “Young Amelia” where he features some of the best young musicians on the West Coast including Fresno’s own Eva Scow and Dusty Brough who grew up in Oakhurst and is now living in San Diego performing with Cerro Negro and his new group Elemenomore about them later.
Hans York and his CD, Young Amelia are attracting nationwide attention. He entered Two of songs, Tell Me Why and Letting Go, into the Kerrville New Folk songwriters contest (800 contestants) and is one of 32 finalists. Kerrville is a big deal. I googled it up and read the history of the competition that grew out of a need to give up and coming artists an opportunity to have their music heard. Peter Yarrow was instrumental in making it happen.
A win at Kerrville carries considerable prestige in the singer-songwriter community. This is in part due to the peer-professional judging and the festival’s long history of recognizing emerging artists who have later gone on to wider success. There have also been examples of notable performers who have appeared as finalists in the competition without ever earning a win. Examples of artists who have performed in the competition include: Steve Earle (1978), John Gorka (1984), Nanci Griffith (1978), Lyle Lovett(1980,1982).
You can google them up and find out more about the Kerrville Folk and New Folk festivals.
Obviously I’m excited about Hans being a finalist.
Season Ticket Holders: This is your bonus concert. Contact me to secure your tickets. 431-3653.

Kent Steadman
Kent Moedl Steadman (1942 - 2008) was born January 17, 1942, during a snow storm at his great-Aunt Mary’s in Sandy, UT. In much the same way as he entered, Kent left this world at the age of 66, when his heart gave out while playing in the snow with his grandson at his home in Burien, WA.
Kent received his Master's of Arts from Brigham Young University in Utah. He was a highly respected art teacher at Fresno City College for 23 years. After retirement, Kent continued to serve as a mentor and teach others about the art of love, intelligence, creativity, and compassion. Born with a disability that he overcame through art and music, Kent understood the joy of being different. A troubadour and vagabond, many will remember his music, which he believed to be the true expression of the soul. Kent was a pioneer on the internet with his site, http://www.cyberspaceorbit.com/, where he shared his philosophy with many people. His playful sense of humor always charmed and uplifted his friends and loved ones.
He was preceded in death by his father, F. Moedl Steadman; mother, Leah Steadman; brother, F. Bruce Steadman. He is survived by his wife, Wendy Steadman; brothers, Stan, Dave, Randy, and Lee Steadman; children, Shannon, Amber, Leah and Brian; grandson, Quentin Camp.
If you would like to send condolences, notes or a donation to help his widow Wendy out with the financial burden this has left her with, the address is:
Kent Steadman; 425 S. 156th Street; #119A; Seattle, WA 98148
(If a check, probably best to make it out to Wendy Steadman)
Kent Steadman was one of the characters that made up the early Folklore Society. He called himself the FFS Sergeant of Arm. He taught art at Fresno City College and by offering an A to any student that built an Appalachian Dulcimer, managed to introduce the instrument to many. He himself was an excellent musician playing guitar, hurdy gurdy, harmonica and of course the dulcimer. He was one of the founding members of Pipe on the Hob many years ago as well as playing in several other groups.
There are plans afoot to have some sort of memorial gathering. I will post any details on the FFS webpage as they are given to me. If you are interested in being notified send me an email

FormerAtomic Antics-Dragon Lady Performers! Help!
I'm in process of transferring all the old VHS performances onto DVD. What a trip to see ourselves so young and gorgeous! (Well, the lighting was, you know, dim...)
I am missing the complete tape of the "Chain of Fools." I have the originals for one camera, which are missing the middle part. Someone else had the complete show. I thought it was poor quality and didn't keep it, but later it turned out it was my TV, not the tape, that was the problem. I cannot remember who filmed that tape. If you have it, can I borrow it to make a DVD? Thank you. Sue Beevers

Fresno Art Museum Exhibit
March 25-May 18 Two must-see exhibits
By Stephanie Wilde and John Nava
The Fresno Art Museum continues to bring outstanding exhibitions thanks to the Curator Jacquelin Pilar. Be prepared to stay a while and really SEE the exhibits. There are magnifying glasses to help you see the exquisite detail of Stephanie Wilde’s Enemies of Love. Her work is reminiscent of Medieval or Renaissance scenes.
You may remember the exquisite Jacquard tapestries created by John Nava for the Cathedral of Our Lady of Angels. His new series of icons are “images that challenge the domestic and foreign policies enacted by the Bush administration. His critique is not limited to the Republican Party or the Neo-Conservative movement but makes a wider critique of all who have been ‘cowed into acquiescence by flag-waving and fear mongering.’ The children depicted in these paintingshis own children among themall seem to ask, ‘What should we learn from this?’ ”

Gove Scrivenor back at Coolwater May 24th
Saturday May 24th at 8:00pm, the irascible and ever entertaining Gove Scrivenor will be back at Coolwater. Gove's contagious energy, unbelievable deep and beautiful voice has made him one of the most popular artists I've ever invited to Coolwater. He excels as a singer, performer and consummate musician.
Gove has recorded with and performed with the best in the business. His friends have lined up to have the opportunity to appear on Gove's recordings, and his work includes backup by Emmy Lou Harris, Nanci Griffith, John Prine, Doc Watson and Marty Stuart.
Gove's work with the autoharp is extraordinary, and sought after by other recording artists that want his unique talents to stamp their efforts. He has worked with Dolly Parton, Neil Young, Burl Ives, Kris Kristofferson, John Hartford, Dan Seals, Hank Williams Jr., Iris Dement, and Glen Campbell just to name a few.
If you've been to a Gove show, you understand why he is so popular...if you haven't been to a Gove show...please don't miss this opportunity! His ability to belt out the blues and sing tender ballads, as well as rip through phenomenal instrumentals is an enormous treat.
This will be the last Coolwater event until this fall. I hope to see you all here and ready for another GREAT evening of music and laughter.
For more information on Gove, please go to www.myspace.com/govescrivenor

Bombies (2001)
Director: Jack Silberman. 57 min. Between 1964 and 1973 the United States conducted a secret air war, dropping over 2 million tons of bombs and making tiny Laos the most heavily bombed country in history. Millions of these 'cluster bombs' did not explode when dropped, leaving the country massively contaminated with 'bombies' as dangerous now as when they fell 30 years ago. Bombies examines the problem of unexploded cluster bombs through the personal experiences of a group of Laotians and foreigners and argues for their elimination as a weapon of war. Unfortunately they are still a standard part of the US arsenal and were dropped in Kosovo, Afghanistan and Iraq._ Golden Gate Award, San Francisco International Film Festival.
