EVENT SCHEDULING
Nancy Waidtlow keeps the FFS calendar so we don’t double up on events. Our organization is not as large as that of more populous folk communities where they can book song circles, story telling, concerts, films and dances all on the same night. And we try to coordinate with the Fresno Filmworks because we draw from the same audience. So if you have an idea for a special folk occasion phone Nancy at 224-1738 or email her to get on the calendar.

Hans York & Young Amelia
www.hansyork.com
July 25 Saturday 7:00 pm. Concert/Potluck in the Wolk Garden 6661 N. Forkner.
Hans York, guitar & vocals; Eva Scow, mandolin; Dusty Brough, guitar; Kevin Hill, double bass.
For fans of York and the Young Amelia Group we're bringing them back to perform in the garden on Saturday evening July 25. We begin the evening at 5:00 with a potluck supper for those who want to gather and talk (and take a swim). The performance begins in the shaded Wolk garden at 7:00 and we finish the evening with dessert and a jam session with the performers and local musicians.
It's a REAL potluck--bring food that you want to share--fruit and salads are great for summer gatherings, desserts for after the concert.
Beer, wine, sodas and lots of ice are welcome additions. We have water in a jug.
Seriously consider bringing your own place settings. It hurts my eco-conscience to use disposable plates and cups. We know how to do it. We were much more eco sensitive in the early days of FFS.
If you haven't heard York and the Young Amelia Group, you're in for a treat. In the meantime you can preview some of the music on youtube or on York's myspace.
Here's what Mike Marshall has to say about the album:
"Hans is a master of sound and poetry who skillfully takes you into his soft magical world. You will not be afraid to open your heart up, allowing him to share his gift and gently close it back up, leaving you all the better for having had this vulnerable place touched." Mike Marshall You can read more glowing reviews on York's website.

Prez Sez-
Thanks!
Serving as the president of the Folklore Society has been an honor and a blessing. The people I’ve worked with on the board and off have been consummate professionals. I’ve had the great privilege of meeting some of the finest musicians in the world as they’ve passed through Fresno as well as the world-class talent that we have living right here. From coordinating membership to baking cookies, acting as concert master to schelepping chairs and greeting patrons this is the hardest working group I’ve ever had the opportunity to be a part of. At the same time we’ve had the most fun I’ve ever enjoyed in my varied peregrinations around the world. The volunteers are what make the Folklore Society work and I thank each and every one of you from the bottom of my heart!
Butit is time, as the walrus said I’m moving on to new opportunities and adventures. We are moving to Hawaii, up-country Maui to be specific. I’m sure there will be lovely people there too but, you have claimed a place in my heart that will always tie me to this place. Please keep in touch.

Earl J. Rivard, Troubadour
The cat is out of the bag! Earl J. Rivard is returning to Fresno. He will perform in the intimate John Alden Studio onSaturday, August 29,from 7:00-9:00 p.m.
From venues as varied as San Francisco's Great American Music Hall, the Blue Chicago club in the Windy City, and Yoshi'shouse of jazz inOakland, blind, bilingual, singer-songwriter, Earl J. Rivard has been using his soulful voice to wow appreciative audiences for over sixteen years. Two years ago, Earl J. performed at theRogue Festival in Fresno.
The drunk driver who blinded Earl J. in infancy also left him partially paralyzed on his left side. Earl J's motivation to learn how to play the guitar, however, led him to reclaim sensitivity and strength in his injured limb. He ultimately developed a unique, sophisticated guitar style to accompany his exceptionally gifted vocals. To sample his recordings, go to www.earljrivard.com
Ticket prices will be $10 for FFS members and $15 for others. John Alden's Studio is located at 2003 Van Ness. Mark your calendar to attend this intimate concert.

Appalachian Mountain Dulcimer for Sale
I am a retired National Park Ranger (Sequoia & Kings Canyon NP and Yosemite NP, among other park areas) who worked in the Applachians along the Blue Ridge Parkway in North Carolina some 30 years ago. My wife and I enjoyed the music of the area among other music, and purchased a mountain dulcimer from another park service employee who not only played many local instruments, but made this dulcimer.
It has been in our closet ever since. We are looking for a person who would put it to loving use.
Surely someone among the Fresno Folklore Society must at least know someone who fits this category, and might be interested in obtaining a beautiful dulcimer for a good price.
Please pass my name and phone number on to whomever might be interested in the instrument.

Toro Nagashi on August 8
Every year the local Japanese cultural society hosts the Toro Nagashi ceremony at Woodward Park. Toro Nagashi happens at the end of the three-day Obon Festivel, a time to remember the dead. This years ceremony will be held on Saturday, August 8 at 7 p.m.
Toro Nagashi involves placing the names of deceased family members/friends on a lantern, along with any messages you might have for them, and setting it float on a lake or river. The lantern represents the spirits of the departed returning to their realm. (During Obon, they're thought to come back and be among us.) The ceremony is very beautiful and serene as darkness falls and the candle lit lanterns float across the Woodward Park Lake.

The Fresno Youth Folklore Society
is an organization which caters to the youth of Fresno, California. The group is dedicated to the preservation of folk arts and culture in the Central Valley. In order for these traditions to survive, culture must be passed down from one generation to the next. For this reason, young people are instrumental in maintaining cultural identity.
The Society exists to bring together Fresno’s young artists, musicians, dancers, and performers. It also seeks to recognize those Fresnans who continue to pass on folk customs and traditions. http://youthfolklore.com/
