Important Information
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW IMMEDIATELY:
·
"You have the right to remain silent. Anything you
say can and will be used against you in a court of law." You have all
heard this before. What it means is DO NOT TALK TO LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICIALS,
investigators, or the prosecutor without advice from your attorney. All too
often the statements you make are misconstrued or may be taken out of context.
You might be tape recorded without your knowledge. Nothing is "off the
record", even if you have not been advised of your Miranda rights
(to remain silent). THE BEST RULE IS TO REMAIN SILENT. THAT IS YOUR
CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHT.
·
A conviction can lead to serious penalties that have
both direct and indirect consequences. You
need to be advised about all of the consequences so you can make an intelligent
and informed decision about your case. Also, if you are employed in a
profession that requires licensing, bonding, or a security clearance, a plea to
get the case over quickly might cost you your job. You should discuss all your
options with an attorney before making the decision on what you should do.
·
Talk with an attorney. Make your decisions after you
are aware of all of your options and all of the consequences.
