  • A person's home is their castle to paraphrase a saying.  It is a place were we spend a great deal of our time.  Where our children, spouse and pets spend perhaps even more time than we do.  What is our home environment like?  In today's society, we usually focus on the relationships to the other people who live with us.  Yet, the physical environment can have a greater impact than we are aware.  The art of Feng Shui is about the relationships between the environment and ourselves.

Consider building materials and the paints that we use to cover them.  Many building items give of chemicals as they age.  Formaldehyde, benzene, ammonia are just a few.  They come from the manufacture with little warning and are used with little thought to how they may affect the inhabitants of the home.  If we rent or buy a home that is old, we have no real way to determine what has gone into its manufacture and upkeep.  Spider plants and porthos plants are excellent for cleaning the air of many chemicals such as formaldehyde, benzene and ammonia.

Our pets are usually the ones to suffer the most.  They are closest to the ground in both the house and the garden.  The things that we use on the garden may not be safe for the pets.  We may make note of how it will affect us, but usually not the cat or dog.

The garden can have soil that has had pollution fall out of the sky from sources that we are unaware of.  What did the last person use on their tomatoes?  How was this site used before it became a home?

The products that we use in our home because they make life convenient or more pleasant.  I am very sensitive to various chemicals that cause a smell.  Items such as air freshener will make me sick.  So will cloths softeners.

If a soap or shampoo has Propylene Glycol in it, I can not use it.  They place were I found this chemical a bit too personal is in sexual lubricants.  Not too good.

It behooves us for our health to be aware of what is making up our home, food and the personal products that we use close to us.  What chemicals are in them?  They may make a difference in your life.
