Beaumont, Tex., Feb. 15 (UPI) – The owners of the Marine Sulphur Queen have sent official condolences to the wife of the ship’s captain, indicating the company has given up hope of finding the 39-member crew of the missing ship alive.Mrs. James V. Fanning received a telegram from H. L. White, board chairman and president of Marine Transport Company last night. Mr. White said he regretted to inform her that the Coast Guard had given up its search for the ship.
Mr. White said all ships in the Atlantic and the Gulf of Mexico had been requested to keep a lookout for the vessel, which was last heard from Feb. 3. The ship was in a routine run from Beaumont to Norfolk, Va.
The ship was carrying a cargo of molten sulphur when she disappeared. The sulphur, if exposed to sea water, could have exploded.
