The Guys and Dolls have been performing in Exhibitions for more than 18 years. It all started as a gag. Most of the group comes from a Square Dance background, but several forms of dance are represented; Clogging, Round Dance, Square Dance thru Advanced, some Ballroom Dancing and Line Dance.
What the Guys and Dolls do is not true square dancing. The calls are all derived from original calls, but they have been modified. The guys cannot allow the dolls to move on their own. All calls must be done in a manner that allows the dolls to always be controlled by the guys. Some calls have been given their own names and sound nothing like square dance calls, but a regular square dance couple can perform all calls. Some movements were actually made up by mistake. While practicing calls we come up with new movements and patterns.
The caller acts more as a pace setter for the group. The caller is a choreographer along with the guys. The group as a team helps establish the patterns and calls to use. All movements are tried and proven, or discarded by vote. You could say that there is nothing we haven’t tried.
The real dolls in the group are the partners that maintain the practice and performance dolls. The wives and significant others that do the maintenance and ‘costume’ arranging are the true backbone of the group.
The team at full strength is eight guys (2 full squares), and one caller. The current caller is Keith Brown. Throughout the history of the Guys and Dolls, we have gone from 10 guys down to 5. We have routines that work with 4, 6, and 8 guys (1 square, Triangles, 2 squares). We have also had the unfortunate experience to dance with the caller in the pattern (any square dancer will know our discomfort). At present we have 9 active members. We would love to make a trip to Europe. We hope to tour Germany and Austria, performing all along the way. The Guys and Dolls are also proud sponsers of the American Cancer Society Relay for Life.
