The Porsche 928 was a controversial car upon introduction at the 1977 Geneva
Auto Salon, with its futuristic styling and unusual, for Porsche at the time,
front-mounted V8 engine with rear transaxle.
The Porsche 928 enjoyed a production run of 17 years, from 1978 to 1995. During
that period, the car's appearance was only slightly updated while its
performance capabilities grew by leaps and bounds. Porsche faithful never took
to the flagship as a replacement for their vaunted 911, which is unfortunate,
for the 928 was not a replacement for anything - it was a completely new
design, unlike any Porsche before it. Despite its smooth lines, luxurious
appointments, and towering abilities coupled with impeccable road manners,
sales of the 928 dwindled until 1995 when the price had settled in the
stratosphere and production numbers were down to a mere few hundred. Porsche
finally discontinued the 928 in 1995.
This space will be used to chronicle some 928 history and other tidbits.
