Sunroof Felt Cleaning
Question
I have some wax accumulation on the sunroof felt of my 928. This gives
the felt a sorta white, chalky look, which looks terrible against a black car.
Any suggestions for how to clean this off?

[Secret process known by only a few. Like all free advice, use at your own risk
of course...]
Multi-step process for me, depending on what the wax is. If it really is just
wax, try a little rubbing alcohol and your ex-wife's old toothbrush. Brush
gently, and blot up the residue with a towel before it drys again. A few passes
will get the bulk of it out. For really stubborn super silicone surface
treatments (the ones that aren't really wax...) you may need to resort to
common mineral spirits instead of the rubbing alcohol. This is tougher on the
felt, so use just enough to get the job done and no more. You'll need to
carefully re-wax the paintwork around the seal when you are done.
The alcohol scrub has the added benefit of removing carwash soap and some hard
water mineral staining from the felt too.
My sunroof felt ends up at the original medium gray color after this treatment.
I like it to be real black on my black car, so I use a new Magic Marker to add
a bit of black back in to the felt. It takes a few tries to get it even, but
the effect is worth the effort in my opinion.
Avoid using any of the silicone trim treatments on the felt. they don't seem to
last very long and will actually seal in any deposits you might not have
scrubbed out completely.
Hope this helps!
