Driver installation for USR Modems upgraded to V90

Hi, if you have a Dell installed, USRobotics X2 ISA Voice modem that you have 'Flashed' to V90 ( PYTV90UP.EXE ) , and you need to install/reinstall it because you installed/reinstalled Windows. Or; if the gremlins have caused your modem to mess up to the point that you need remove it from device manager and reinstall it.

Well...........................
Your in luck! I have had these problems before, and this is what I do to fix them.

Please read through these instructions completely before starting. Make sure you have no questions, and that you have the disk/drivers needed for your modem.

This modem could be called any number of things by Dell, and this is where the confusion starts. The real things you can see that will tell you if you have the "Voice" modem is that;

1. On the back of your system you will see your modem.
( You know............ The place you plug your phone line into.)
Well, if you have a place to plug in a microphone, and a line out jack. That shows that you have some kind of "Voice" modem.
(Now Dell has confused the 'voice' issue further by installing some "Voice" modems that have no mic input or output jack. The connections are internal to the sound card, but nowhere in the online documentation is there any information about this. Kudos Dell)

2. Nowhere, will you find any mention of, "WinModem". If you see a reference to "WinModem", in your invoice, Device Manager, Modem properties, or anywhere else.......
If you don't find "WinModem", keep reading.

3. You need to know if your modem has been upgraded from X2, to V90. If your modem came from Dell already with V90, the following instructions may, or may not help.
Well, if you did the "Flash" yourself, keep on reading.

If you are unsure as to what modem Dell has installed in your system, just post a message in the Dell T@lk© forum. List you question along with your "Service Tag" number, and Chris B. or one of the other Dell techs will reply with the information.

Ok now;
Lets say you FORMAT and reinstall your operating system, ( fdisk / format instructions ) or for some reason you have removed your modem from the device manager.
When Windows looks for the PNP hardware to install, guess what? That modem you upgraded to V90 wont be installed properly. (Should we blame MS, USR, or Dell?)
Anyway, now that's no problem since you found this handy set of instructions.

Just go to; My Computer/Control Panel/System/Device Manager
You should see that there is a problem with your modem. (No kidding!!!)

Just highlight the modem that is listed, and click on 'Remove' at the bottom of the window.
Tell Windows, "Yup, I want that sucker gone".
Don't restart Windows!!!

Now go to; My Computer/Control Panel/Add new Hardware
The hardware wizard should start up. Just remember, you want to add a new MODEM.
When you get to the choice about adding the modem from a list or from a disk.
Choose 'Have Disk'.

Now you need to pop the floppy disk that you flashed your modem to V90 with into the drive and point the way to the files on it. Click, OK.
Windows will be proud to tell you, "Hey!!! look at me!!! I found the files that will make your modem work!!! (Windows is sooooo fickle. It will always take credit for doing something good. But if your system crashes................. Software)

If Windows does not proclaim success at finding the right files, either I really screwed up these instructions. (No Waaaay!!) Or you need to start from the beginning, and pay more attention to what your doing :o)
