There are three different types of graphic creation programs available for web designers.
Vector-Based drawing programs use mathematical calculations to draw the shapes. Because of the math involved, the curves and shapes created with these programs are extra smooth. There are no extruding pixels, jagged corners or distorted circles. These programs are mainly used for drawing. Graphic designers will use vector-based graphic programs to create original artwork, complex real-life items and business logos, For example, the logo on the right was created using a vector drawing program. Once images are created, they are typically exported to another program for color, texture and other enhancements.

Common vector-based programs are Adobe Illustrator and Macromedia Freehand.

Raster (pixel based) graphic programs are used to create and edit images that are measured in pixels. Designers use these programs to edit scanned images, create buttons and banners. Common features on these programs include effects to make the images more dynamic and noticeable, type (font) placement, and layer masking to merge two documents together.

Some drawing can be accomplished here but it is harder to create complex shapes. For example, it would impossible to draw an automobile in a raster program.

The graphic on the right was shaded using Adobe Photoshop. Other enhancements can also be done to the picture.

The most popular raster program is Adobe Photoshop. Others include Paintshop Pro and Macromedia Fireworks.

3D Programs are optional. Because of their price, most personal web sites will not have 3D images. However, they play a big role in making people notice them. 3D models are created simply by taking shapes and stretching them until the desired effect is aquired. Next, lighting and shading can be applied for realism.

One major drawback is the complexity of these programs. Some of these programs are involved in the creation of movies such as Ants, Flubber and other special effects heavy movies. So you can imagine what it takes to create the graphics.

Popular 3D imaging programs are 3D Studio Max, Macromedia Extreme 3D, and Lightwave.
