Just a quick reminder to everyone that paddling season is not over.
While July always seems to be a month where paddlers take breaks,
vacation with their families, crews dissolve and re-group, we still
have lots of race opportunities to take advantage of.
Next Saturday, July 22, is Sprint State Champs in Santa Barbara. Pale
Kai will be taking 6 kids crews to compete, and is already trailering
the canoes. We encourage any adults interested in fun short races, a
festive outrigger atmosphere, and a good beer garden to put crews
together and go to Santa Barbara. Show the kids and SCORA Pale Kai's
PURPLE POWER!
Coming up in August and September are 9 person races down South, or
more ironmans up North. Hugh Dohi & Bill Fletcher are putting together
men's crews for 9 man and Jill is putting together a women's crew for
9 person season. Contact them if you are interested. Several paddlers
are also discussing crews for Alcatraz and Angel Island. If you are
interested, please let me know, as I will probably try to arrange
borrowed canoes for those races.
On the distant horizon, Oct. 21 & 22, is regatta races on Lake Las
Vegas, baby! NAC will trailer canoes for that race, so all you have to
do is put together your polyester and quarter collection, and jump on
the Pale Kai caravan to the desert. Remember "what happens in Vegas,
stays in Vegas!" Actually, it would be a fun way to support the
outrigger club and connect with the huge polynesian population in
Vegas. They say there are more Hawaiians living in Vegas now, than in
Hawaii.
Pale Kai will be holding a Board Meeting on August 15th at 6:30 pm at
the Yacht Club. This is a meeting for the board to take care of some
business and discuss by-law change proposals for the Fall by-law
meeting. We will not be voting on by-law changes at this meeting, so a
quorum is not required. If you are on our board, please try to make
this meeting. If you are not a board member, you are welcome to
attend. If you have any new business, please let me know asap so I can
put it on the agenda.
As a closing statement... A HUGE MAHALO to those who participted in
last Saturday's road clean-up. A few of the usual suspects were there
(of course) and a few novice "trash pickers". Your efforts are
all
very much appreciated and the road to Avila looks much better! I would
love to see every Pale Kai member participate in this important
community service at least once a year, or even once in your lifetime.
Happy Paddling!
