Novice Steering Recommendations
Mike Shandroff and Mike Nunno were tasked at the last meeting with proposing recommendations for qualifying novice steersmen. They have come up with the following recommendations:
-
Get a club-recognized steersman to agree to train you.
-
Read the steering guide book, "The Art and Skill of Steering."
-
Read the "California Boaters Safey Course," take and pass the test in it.
-
Train with the club steersman.
-
Be able to demonstrate basic skills of steering (commands, strokes, pokes, rigging, radio use, etc.)
-
Do a huli drill in open water.
-
Get the Steersman to recommend you to the club board as a new recognized steersman.
The PKO executive board will come up with the list of current club-recognized steersmen.
Finances
$3,000 from last year.
$10,000 grant for Kids Program for the 2005 season.
Insurance
Our insurance expires next week.
Members present at the meeting voted to reinstate our insurance for $1100/year for $40,000 coverage. Covers vandalism, flooding, driving.
Equipment
Need new canvas top for the tent
Mike Shandroff will investigate
New canoe, ama, and iakos
Senior Masters and Masters crews must race in bradley canoes. This means that we could only have one mens and one women's or coed crew race in our bradley, any additional masters/senior masters crews would have to race as an open crew. Jeff proposed buying another bradley with a foam core for $8,000. To rebuild the current bradley would be approximately $4000.
Lon suggested that we buy a striker if the club just wants a good canoe but isn't set on medaling in senior masters/masters races. The striker runs $6900.
Denise suggested trading our Mirage during races to a team with a bradley.
Lon suggested selling the clippers to get a bradley and perhaps a striker.
Mike mentioned that the clippers have a lot of value in being so durable, usable even in the off-season.
Result:
Motion was made and then passed the vote to buy a new bradley.
Lon will set up the order for a two Bixler amas and four iakos.
Trailer
Jeff recommends hauling the canoes upside down. Hugh has a quantity of fire hose that could be used as a replacement for the metal saddles. Tom, Mike Nunno, and Jeff will come up with a design for hauling the canoes upside down, have a wheel put on the trailer, and get the canoe painted. Scott Bixler said he's already had the bearings repacked
Dollies
People would like to raise the height of the dollies. Mike Nunno will research making copies of the "good" dolly. Lon will assist with finding a vendor for the tires
Miscellaneous
Mike mentioned Joe has a lead on a CPR class, and recommends members get certified. Jason will investigating having a CPR class especially for PKO members with an instructor that he knows. Later, on 1/20/2005, Joe sent the following link for information about CPR courses:

Denise says there are still plenty of jersies left. Contact Denise if you are interested.
Dara will investigate a possible Cal Poly Graphic Art student logo design contest. Many members like the old logo: Lon will find a copy of it (dots and canoe). The club will vote on the final logo design, perhaps at the kick-off party.
