Race Rigging/Derigging
To ensure that the work of rigging and loading the canoes for races is shared equally among all crews, the process will be as follows:
-
On Thursday evening prior to each race, the Tuesday/Thursday crews will load the boats on to the trailer, tie them down, and load pfds, bailers and buckets, straps, rubber strips, steering blades and extra paddles.
-
The morning of the race the women's crews and the Monday/Wednesday coed crews will arrive to the race site early to offload and rig the canoes.
-
After the race the men's crews will derig and load the canoes back on to the trailer, along with the pfds, etc.
-
On the Sunday after the race the Monday/Wednesday coed and women's crews will unload the canoes from the trailer and rig them.
Trailer: Finding a Truck and Insurance
The trailer is fixed, and can carry 6 canoes. The problem is finding a truck to haul it. The rental company we used to rent from no longer has trucks. Dennis recommended calling Enterprise which might have Dodge pickup trucks. Lon mentioned that the truck hookup must accomodate the trailer's electric brakes. Carrying 4 canoes without using the electric brakes will be too dangerous.
Discussion then ensued about liability. Lon suggested having insurance on the trailer of $1 million/$1 million/$1 million, same as for the SCORA races. Mike Shandroff mentioned that he has a new boater's insurance section in his insurance policy that might be applicable. Lon and Jeff will look into getting insurance for the trailer.
Trailering Canoes to Races
Lon will trailer the canoes down to the first San Diego race. Jeff will trailer down to the Santa Barbara and Marina races. Ken will trailer down tothe Ventura race. Mike Shandroff will trailer the canoes to the 2nd San Diego race, and Lon will ride with him.
Weighing and Weighting The Canoes
All of the boats weigh approximately 365 pounds. They will be weighed at the the first San Diego race. We have 17 pound weights that will be duct taped to the canoes prior to the race, and bolted in afterward. Jeff, Lon, Denise and Mike offered to first duct tape the weights to the boat and then bolt them on.
Races
Jeff's, Lon's, and Mike Shandroff's crews are planning to do all 5 races.
The novice men's crews are planning to do Santa Barbara, Ventura, and Marina.
Seats
Denise will buy gardening knee pads which will be glued on to all canoe seats after the San Diego race (after the weights have been bolted to the seats).
Dues, Waivers, Driver's Licenses
Denise is organizing all of this information. She received more dues, waivers, and copies of driver's licenses from club members.
Club Paddles
Jeff asked that all members buy their own paddles rather than using the club paddles, which are really intended for newcomers and the junior paddling program.
Amas
The new amas are on their way to Jeff's house.
SCORA Demographic Survey
SCORA has a demographic survey they'd like all members to fill out and return. Hugh says that SCORA is losing race sites due to very high State race permitting fees. The survey results will be given to potential race sponsors who may help with the cost of SCORA expenses.
