Tracks in the Sand

April 1998

Everything started in the fall of 1960 and ended in early 1997. My first years were at USAF hospital clinical labs (Andrews AFB and Amarillo AFB). Next came three years at San Francisco State College (BA, Clinical Science), a couple years in a private lab, and then back to San Francisco State University for an MA in biology with emphasis in immunology.

My California licensed professional career began in 1967 at the private lab and then continued at Children's Hospital of San Francisco (CHSF) until April 1994 at which time I moved to Seton Medical Center in Daly City. The Air Force years provided me with a good overview of the entire lab while the private lab introduced me to manual special chemistry. However, after grad school, the rest of my time was spent in the microbiology area and included bench teaching to and for the rookies (my affectionate term for trainees). Rookie Cookies can be found in the Kitchen. From 1970 until the early 1990s I gave the immunology/serology lectures to rookies far and wide, including several review seminars for CAMLT.

My thoughts on several phases of retirement planning will appear in the O&P corner and in brief, here is my financial background.

Prior to 1981, my investment knowledge was about zero. The first formal class that I took was Security Investments in the fall of 1987. In the years since, I have taken three accounting classes, attended four or five investment seminars, and read various forms of financial publications (both on the net and in print). This year (1998) is my first as an AARP tax aide; the three week training was spread over November and January and was followed by a written take-home exam that took 7-8 hours to complete.
