These letters were transcribed from the original text by William Dunton c. 1981. There are eleven complete letters and one incomplete letter. They span the time written between the fall of 1862 and the spring of 1865. (Links to related sites are at the bottom of this page). It has been five years since I put my Uncle’s transcriptions of my great-great grandfather’s letters from the War of the Rebellion (“Civil War”) onto the web. Since that time I’ve seen a few Civil War enthusiasts have linked to the site, and that it’s been given a Yahoo listing. Including my Uncle William Dunton who transcripted the original letters, and myself, Samuel S. Dunton has only fifteen living descendents. We’ve been gratified to know that we’ve been able to share his letters with over 15,000 people who have visited this website. We’re particularly gratified that a couple of school districts in the United States have linked to his letters as original source material. I’ve come across an original addition of the regimental
history, which was loaned to me by my Aunt, Samuel S. Dunton’s great
granddaughter, a resident of Long Island, NY. Together with the regimental history and information from a couple of history books about the Civil War, I’ve added some background information. |
