Died
At Chittenango Nov 19th 1861 A Volunteer in the 14th Regiment of New York
State Volunteers
The deceased was a young man of intelligence of the strictes
(sic) honor of high social worth and greatly esteemed by all who knew him. Not possessed of the riches and tangible professions tha (sic) go to make up the comforts of this life, but dependent solely upon his own exertions for success he had with flattering expectation taken upon himself to be the architect of his own fortune. Guided by the noble instinct and urged on by the purest devotion to his country he left a lucrative situation and the society of friends to fight the battles of the Union and sustain with his life if need be the honor and integrity of the flag.He responded to the call of the
(unintelligible) among the first and upon his departure look with him a well filled purse and a revolver the contributions of his friends and associates as pledges there (sic) good wishes and esteem. His strict attention to his duty and ever active earnest in the cause, secured him the position of Sergeant of his Company.Arriving upon the bank of the Potomac in compliment for his
(unintelligible) in attending to the duties to the duties of his office he was detailed as a recruiting officer and came home for that purpose. Immediately upon his arrival home he was attacked with the malignant fever of which he died.His funeral on the 21st was largely attended the
(unintelligible) fire company of which this deceased was formerly a member were present in uniform. Lieut. Condi of the Havely (?) lock (unintelligible) Artillery with a squad of his men who were home on furlough performed the part of the bearer. A large concourse of citizens followed to his grave and witnessed that last imposing rites over the dead, Jason sleeps the long sleep that knows no waking. He is mustered with the dead but the soil above him like its tenant is free.
