Rite of Release: Feline Familiar

Materials Needed: 

White or purple candle, flowers, fresh catnip (if in season), a Tiger's Eye gemstone, and a lock of hair from the owner(s). These things should be placed in the West. 

Instructions: 

The Circle is cast in the usual manner. The familiar's remains or ashes are placed in the West. If this is not possible, then a photograph or something of the familiar's should be placed there instead. Each person may bring a flower or some small token to give to the familiar's Spirit. The familiar's caretaker/owner(s) are to stand in the Northwest. 

PRIESTESS SAYS: 

"Dear ones, we are drawn within the Sacred Circle to bid farewell to _________, beloved familiar and friend to __________; and also to lend our support to our grieving Craft-sister/brother." "Our grief is bittersweet for we know tht death is but a gateway to new life. Yet, we grieve, for _____________was a dear friend, and his/her physical presence shall be missed." 

PRIEST SAYS: 

"____________ know you that your cat loved you and that life with you was his/her joy. Your sorrow is deep and your thoughts of him/her fill you with love touched by pain." "Know that his/her Spirit will always be with you and that s/he will seek you in your dreams and within the silence of meditation. It is a small comfort to know that only his/her body has Crossed the Mist, for the essence that is ____________lives on." 

The priestess moves to the West, where she draws an invoking pentacle over the remains and invokes the following: "Bast, beloved Goddess and Protectress of Cats, I call upon You to receive one of Your little ones." 

The Priestess sprinkles the remains with salt-water, saying: "Bast, I bid you safeguard his/her passage." 

The Priestess passes the smoking censer over the remains, saying: "Bast, I give him/her over to Your tender care." 

The Priestess then dips her right forefinger in patchouli oil and draws the Rune of Death upon the Familiar's brow or urn as the case may be. She says: "Bast, I release him/her to You so that s/he may continue his/her work upon a higher lever." 

The Priestess moves to the East and raises her hands in the "Pentacle Position." The Priest rings a bell once, letting the tone fade. the Priestess invokes: "My Lady of the East, Iris, Goddess of the Rainbow, I ask that You ease ___________'s Spirit and our own Spirits in this time of transition. I entreat You to guide _________'s Spirit as s/he travels through Your realm of light and beauty. Set his/her feet upon Your Rainbow Bridge, guide and strengthen his/her steps as s/he walks the Rainbow of Light from his/her former life to his/her new life with- in the Summerland." 

Pause for a space of nine heartbeats. The Priestess moves to the South and raises her hands in the "Pentacle Position." The Priest rings a bell once, letting the tone fade. The Priestess invokes: "My Lady of the South, Shekinah, goddess of Consuming Fire, I ask that You ease ___________'s Spirit and our own Spirits in this time of transition. I entreat You to guide ____________ as s/he travels through Your realm of fire and light. Shine Your Flaming Torch so that this be the burning brand that guides his/her soul from his/her former life to his/her new life within the Summerland." 

Pause for a space of nine heartbeats. The Priestess moves to the West and raises her hands in the "Pentacle Position". The Priest rings a bell once, letting the tone fade. The Priestess invokes: "My Lady of the West, Morgaine, Goddess of Avalon, I ask that You ease _________'s Spirit and our own Spirits in this time of transition. I entreat You to guide ___________as s/he travels through Your realm of muted twilight. Bathe his/her soul in the Waters of Chalice Well, so that s/he may be healed of any lingering pain or sorrow from his/her former life. Let him/her drink of the Sacred Waters so that Your love will flow through him/her as s/he begins his/her new life within the Summerland." 

Pause for a space of nine heartbeats. The Priestess moves to the North and raises her hands in the "Pentacle Position". The Priest rings a bell once, letting the tone fade. The Priestess invokes: "My Lady of the North, Hecate, Goddess of the Underworld, I ask that You ease _________'s Spirit and our own Spirits in this time of transition. I entreat You to guide _____________as s/he travels the widdershins spiral to Your realm of the Otherworld. Let Your Sacred Messenger, the Night-Owl, call his/her name three times to announce his/her passage from life (Priest rings bell once), to death (Priest rings bell once), to rebirth (Priest rings bell once)." 

Pause for a space of nine heartbeats. The Priestess returns to the Center of the Circle and raises her hands in the "Pentacle Position". The Priest rings a bell once, letting the tone fade. The Priestess invokes: "My Lady of the Radiant Center, Arianrhod, Goddess of Caer Arianrhod, _____________resides now within the Circle of Your Stellar Crown. His/her spirit knows Your peace and love. Here s/he has found rest and renewal. S/he awaits the time of reunion with those whom s/he loved, and when next the Spiral turns _____________ will leave the heart of Caer Arianrhod and tread the deosil spiral of Rebirth." 

The caregiver/owner(s) says "Lady, Goddess of Birth, Death and Rebirth, a great and loving soul resides now between the worlds. I release my beloved familiar _____________ to You and ask that You love and care for my dear little one. Lord, God of all things Wild, a great and loving soul resides now between the worlds. I release my beloved familiar __________to You and I ask that You love and care for my dear little one." 

The remains may now be buried or cremated. the ashes may be scattered to the winds, the Earth, or to the sea. Cakes and wine follow.
