In 1989, after 6 months preparation, I started my journey on the Silk Road, an ancient trade route linking China and imperial Rome.

I went alone on foot, by bus, and by cart ... whatever kind of conveyance was available at the time.
I will never forget that night I spent sleeping under the stars in the middle of the desert in a town called Three Trees, which had just that: three trees, no people, no provisions, and no way out until the next day.
