Have you ever watched your favorite guitarist and wondered how they make playing look so easy? Well, the answer to that question is: because to them it IS easy! They play so effortlessly because they have mastered the single greatest stumbling block that prevents most players from ever reaching that level of playing: TENSION-FREE CONTROL OF THIER BODY.
It is from this central fact that I base my teaching. Without learning how to do that, the aspiring guitarist will likely never progress beyond a certain point. The key to achieving this level of control is learning one skill. This skill is perhaps the single most important skill to learn on the guitar. With progressive mastery of this single skill, you can achieve almost anything you want to on the guitar. This skill is: the Skill of Practice.
Yes, practice is a skill! You can learn it, improve it and master it. And ANYONE can learn it. Once you have started to work on and improve this skill, you will be AMAZED at what you will be able to do on guitar. Together, I will help you improve this skill, as well as other guitar skills, so that you can help me achieve MY goal: making YOU the best guitar player you can be.
One of the single most important works that have come out in recent years with repect to guitar instruction is the "Principles of Correct Practice for Guitar". On this page you will find a link to the Guitar Principles web site. This is the prime source of instructional material for my teaching.
--------------------- About Me and Lessons ----------------------
I live in the Burlingame area on the penninsula of the San Francisco area. I have been playing guitar for over 30 years. On this page you will find a link to some of my recordings and playing. Beyond teaching the Guitar Principles, I am also accomplished at Blues and Rock improvisation. My second goal in teaching, is to also teach you the skills that will help to make you a great improvisor. Anyone can learn to do this and with the proper training (and a bit of effort on your part) it can be surprisingly easy to get started with it or improve the skills you already may have if you've been playing for a bit.
Above all, I want your learning experience to be FUN! Together, we can cover some of the music you really want to learn. However, I believe you will experience the most fun when you are capable of playing whatever you want and always making progress on the guitar. If you are looking for the typical guitar teacher that teaches by the "Song a Week" method, you should probably look elsewhere. I would rather teach you "how to catch your own fish", than just hand you fish on a platter.
