The first meeting at the Yucca Community Center scheduled for 7-8-03, met and convened @ 7:30 p.m. A quorum was present and Chair Paul Woolsey opened with greetings. Council deputy Baysdar Thomasian was present. John Ehretz presented a list of major concerns and issues of Yucca Corridor residents for contemplation and future action. He led off with an itemization of the dramatic lack of off street parking for the Easterly vicinity of the Corridor. Having had previous estimates given questioned by a member present at the election meeting. Building by building he itemized the 1700 & 1800 blocks of Wilcox Ave. & the adjacent structures at the intersection of Yucca Street. His total was 310. Which to say that 310 residential apartments lacked off street parking. Considering adjacent vicinities such as the 1800 block of Grace Avenue, The Trylon Hotel, the Halifax Apts. @ Yucca & Cahuenga, and the Avondale apts. @ 1825 Cahuenga, he estimated another 200 residences lacking off street parking. A truly immense number. He urged that the Galpin truck leasing lot on Cahuenga be purchased by the CRA for parking needs of residents and Hollywood Blvd. commercial parking needs. Additionally, he urged realization of a very popular neighborhood concept, the removal of the liquor complex @ Wilcox & Yucca and its replacement by a parking structure. The lack of both commercial and residential parking in this vicinity denying new attractive uses on the Blvd. Criminal Gangs, their local drug dealings, street crimes and graffiti were second on his list. Next: the now historic attraction to the Corridor of career vagrants and opportunistic criminals by excess local retail liquor, and lately, an increase of niteclub operations indifferent to the needs of residents. Incompetent management of apartment buildings and commercial such, leading to crime and degradation of the neighborhood. The Commodore Apts. on Cherokee Ave., The ReTan Hotel and the Motel 6 on Whitley constitute centers for the criminally inclined and so endanger the fragile civility of the neighborhood. "Doggy Doo" is an increasingly unhappy condition on parkways and needs appropriate attention. Aesthetics: improving the appearance of our streets by lessening the prison like appearance of fenced frontages. Paul Woolsey, and members reviewed their complaints with respect to the operations of the Las Palmas Niteclub. The meeting was adjourned @9:00 p.m. Next meeting to be the 2nd Tuesday in August. (the 12th @ 7:30 pm same place.) John Ehretz
Yours for a nicer Hollywood, John
Ehretz
