How power corrupts

The recent examples, our city attorney, etc. illustrate the timeless truism.

The acid of power quickly lays bare the essence of character. Whether the gain is petty  or power and influence no matter. In truth, the petty is the least damaging to the commonweal.

Eric Garcetti  in an editorial commentary in the L.A. Business Journal seemed to say : tough totems, to those who lamented that the Blvd lay stagnant and empty for lack of parking, instead he bloviated on the nearness of the parking structures, and the ‘ability to park and ride’ to Blvd venues. Come and enjoy Hollywood,he said expansively. I doubt that he has actually walked the Blvd.  On channel 35, his review of restaurants was comprised of  3 mom & pop venues in Silverlake, City College and Little Armenia.   That Hollywood lacked even one of those popular restaurants that Middle America or tourists will wait an hour for a seat, yet Rancho Cucumonga had all six, evidently was alien to him. That Middle America would want to walk and shop on the Blvd for intimate apparel, tattoos, and incense, bespeaks only of one who hasn’t been around lately.

Last Saturday HHWNC held an outreach party in the Highland Complex, reports are that it was well attended and well planned.  our Neighborhood Councils are coming to be the only authentic such,  given the dysfunction of the City Council, and the gravely compromised nature of the elections.  We urge an initiative for a new  city charter which assigns them the role.  A wealth of talent and experience, and all volunteer, no careerists.

The niteclub scene

Quieting down would be the most generous appraisal, with the explosion of such in the ‘burbs and all over, in Hollywood, they are open only for special events...and many of those attract the violent.Last May,  the 1835 Cahuenga club and surrounds was host to gunslingers who shot up the club, autos in front and nearby buildings. At 2:30 am, witnessed by a patrolling parking control auto and called in to the Police, our information is that 3 guns were confiscated, 2 arrested, one shot in the leg with some 22 shells picked up. Hip Hop venues  said to really attract the unruly and violent.

Clearly,  Old Hollywood is going to have to get another theme agoin’.

Blvd Parades, marches & marathons..

We wonder:
Does the right to peaceably assemble really mean the unlimited right to interfere with traffic and and the lives of others?

It sure has come down to that hereabouts.

We think not.   Rather, the right is to peacefully assemble in a public venue such as the Hollywood Bowl, the Coliseum, etc, etc.  The right is to assemble, not a right to dominate the highways and byways, not to incite violence by mobs.

The malign have used such means to intimidate and terrorize thruout history.  We only mindlessly allow it.

No cause is rightly advanced by such confrontations, nor constitutionally guaranteed, in our view.

Then & Now...

What have we gained and what have we lost in the past 25 years?

Back then we had 2 symphony orchestras, 3 live theatres catering to national troupes, we were a center for bookstores and collectors. Now we have Iphones but no ‘music’ just noise. etc, etc. One could go on and on.

The only tiny blossom of musical civility is being asserted on radio and not on classical themed radio, rather, by the host of the show replacing
Howard Stern’s !!!  There is hope.....if the classic vulgar anoints Mozart and denounces 20th century crap mayhap the 21st century has ascent possibilities, what other choice, come to think of it we have fully plumbed the depths of depravity.

Housing updates & gossip:

Inside info:
The City Council’s action extending rent control to all multi-family buildings was really intended as a revenue raising mode. tho paraded publicly as a tenant protection, it is a tenant tax, since such are already paying market rates.

Similarly a proposed increase in trash pickup fees for apartment and home dwellers.

To add new burdens on residents whilst the city is afloat with the highest revenues in history due to monumental property tax income, bespeaks of the alien world of L.A.  governance.

The Lido Apartments have been sold again, according to a long time resident.

The 1812 Wilcox structure will be moved up near to Franklin Ave., and the area down to the Pla Boy complex will site 36 condominium homes in a 5 story structure, with 2 stories of underground parking.  Said to start clearing next February.

1825 Cahuenga has been sold, some say.

A regional apt. mgr confides to a local that on inspection at one location bunk beds were lined up in profusion in an apt. In the local’s building, the population of the building averaged out to 4 per single apartment.  Affordable housing ???
