James was diagnosed with aniridia when he was 6 weeks old. Our doctor didn't think there was anything wrong with him. However, we thought his pupils looked strange and wondered why he wouldn't open his eyes when we were outside, so we got a second opinion. Once we started reading about aniridia, we became very worried. Our pediatric opthamologist reassured us that he seemed to have fairly good vision, but we wouldn't know exactly what he could see for a long time. We bought him a black and white mobile and were relieved when he started responding to it. We have received a lot of support and instruction from a visual specialist at the Blind Babies Foundation. So far his main symptom is light sensitivity, so he wears a hat and sunglasses when we are outside. |
