Who Offers Free Homepages?

Here's a list of free homepage providers, I recommend GeoCities, where this page is located.

Getting a Page at GeoCities

At GeoCities, you need to decide on a neighborhood to "move into" (the "home" metaphor is very strong at GeoCities, with neighborhoods, blocks, and "homesteads" being the basic structure). To see the various neighborhoods, click here.

Once you decide on a neighborhood, click it, then click Join This Neighborhood,, and scroll down that page to Vacancies.

Find a block with a lot of vacancies, and click that. Then scroll down the page till you find a "vacant lot," and click that.

You will then be presented with a page giving you the details of the User Agreement, and the restrictions on using free pages at GeoCities (mainly no sexual content or nudity, and no commercial use). Click the button at the bottom to accept the terms (unless you don't want to).

You will at this point be on a page asking you to fill out your personal information, some of which is required (and the required info is clearly indicated), some is optional. When you're asked about your personal interests, be aware that you might get commercial e-mail from checking any of this information. Doublecheck all the settings of the optional material near the bottom of this page.

Then click the button at the bottom of the page to register. Sometimes, you'll get caught up in a "registration loop," being sent repeatedly through the pages you already went through once. I this happens, go back to the neighborhood page and try another block and address. Eventually, you will successfully register.

One very important point: be absolutely sure that the e-mail address in your registration information is precisely correct, because your initial password is sent through e-mail to you, and if you give a bad e-mail address, you won't be able to access your page at all.

After you get your page registered, make sure to make some sort of change to the page (for instance, removing the "haven't moved in yet" text), because if you leave the page unchanged for two weeks, you'll lose the page and have to register all over again.

FTP: Transferring Your Own Files to Your Page

You can now copy any image, sound, or HTML file from anywhere on the Internet to your GeoCities homepage (or Tripod, Angelfire, or Fortune City homepage), using the Transloader created by Anthony Chu. Read the instructions on that page carefully before you use the site.

If you want a personal picture put on your page, you need to get the pic scanned and uploaded (the Transloader won't help here because your pic isn't already on the Web, so it doesn't have a URL to be copied from). You'll have to get someone with a computer to do this for you (or rent time on a computer at a Kinko's or similar business, these businesses will also do scanning and uploading for you for a small price). You'll have to give out your homepage username and password for this to be done, so it's a good idea to change your password before and again after the file transfers are done.

To find some folks who'll do this scanning and FTPing for you for free or a small fee, click here.
