OBJECT
Be the first person to successfully move through all six rooms of the home, demonstrating your knowledge of fire safety along the way. Note: this game has been designed to be played by children in grades 4 and up.
NUMBER OF PLAYERS
Two to four players, plus one player designated as "fire chief' who reads the questions. (See "Other Ideas for Teachers" below for playing this game in the classroom.)
MATERIALS NEEDED
Playing token for each player (coin, button, thimble), colored pencil or crayon for each player, and one die. Printout of the game board, and game questions.
RULES
1. Each player should place his/her token on one of the four START boxes located in the corners of the home.
2. Each player should roll the die; highest roll goes first.
3. During each player's turn, he/she should roll the die and move the corresponding number of spaces in a horizontal or vertical direction. Diagonal moves are not allowed. Players can move from room to room through open doorways. They are not allowed to "walk" through walls (the dark boundary lines between rooms).
4. When entering a room, players should move into the gray square containing the name of the room (exact rolls are not required). Once the player reaches the square, the designated "fire chief" asks an Out Smart! question from the provided list.
5. If the player answers the question correctly, he/she colors in one of the squares of that room with his/her marker or crayon. The "fire chief" should read the complete answer that is provided. That player's turn is then over and play proceeds to the right.
6. If the player answers the question incorrectly, the "fire chief" reads the correct answer and the player must remain in that room until his/her next turn. (See optional rules for a variation.)
7. Once a player has a colored square in each room, he or she must exit the home through the front door in the living room, or through the side doors in the dining room or in the hallway next to the bathroom. The first person to have colored squares in each room and to exit the home wins the game.
If a player answers a question incorrectly, the person to his/her right may try to answer the question. If that person answers correctly, he/she may color in a square in their room of choice, whether or not their token is in that room at the time. That player may then take their normal turn. Each time a player colors a square in any room, he/she must point to the two ways out of that room.
1. Put this game in your school's learning center.
2. Enlarge the playing board, divide your students into teams, and have the entire class play the game.
3. Write the questions and answers on the front and back of index cards and place in a stack next to the playing board. This way, everyone can play the game and there does not need to be a designated "fire chief' (question reader).
4. Duplicate this game for children to bring home and play with their families.
5. Have older students teach the Out Smart! game to younger students.
