This
is my take on the family of James and Anna Jones Webb. Most of the information
is from a July 1906 Stockton Evening Record article
about James on the event of his 100th birthday. Information from
the work of Beryl Peoples, M. Mossuto, June Sherman and Jean Messick was
used to fill in some of the blanks. Two of the children married Gards;
these links will be established soon. Click
here for some notes on the Webbs..
HUSBAND: James WEBB
b. 27 Jul 1806 near Bonus Bunel, (my guess is Boonesboro) Kentucky;
d. 2 Jun 1907 Fair Oaks, San Joaquin Co.,Calif.
m. about 1825 probably in Tenn.
James was born in Ky., it hasn't been proven where; I
understand he said he didn't remember. One story is that his parents and
other Townsends were visiting property in Logan Co., Ky. when he was born.
His family moved to Tenn. around 1820 and farmed there. James later
moved to Missouri about 1844 (according to Tinkham's 1909 San Joaquin Co.
History). He then came to Calif. with much of his family in 1854 escorted
at least part of the way by Charles Gard who married his daughter Nancy almost
immediatly after arriving. He farmed the area around Peter's for many
years then retired to the Fair Oaks area just outside Stockton. In
Oct., 1870, James and most of his family moved to near Los Banos; I don't
know when they returned to San Joaquin County. James patented land
in Merced County some of it for Miller and Lux the local cattle barons.

The lists I've seen of the children do not always agree.

list. ² indicates only on my [M. Mossuto's]

The 3 deaths in April 1878 suggest an epidemic. Other
children were listed as dying the same months.

Notes:
- There was said (Beryl Peoples) to have been two daughters b. 1835-7
who died young
- Jesse Webb came across the plains with his wife Malinda probably in
1852 (my mother remembered there was a crossing then but could not recall
who). They were helped by Charles and John Gard who would have been
making their third crossing.
- Jesse sent for his father James who came across with some of the children
in 1854 helped by Charles Gard (I don't know about John). When the party
got to Stockton, Charles and Nancy Webb were married.
- The Webb family settled east of Stockton between Linden and Peter's;
most of them were in the Douglass Twp. Charles' family already owned
property in the area. Some of the Webb family still lives in the Bellota-Jenny
Lind region to the N.E.
- Peter's was a stop on the Stockton-Copperopolis railroad which was
built to haul out copper ore for the civil war. The railroad got as
far as Milton which seems to be famous primarily for having the hotel at
which Black Bart dropped his handkerchief.
- James Webb died in the Fair Oaks district of Stockton which is S.E.
of the present junction of highways 4 and 99; it can be found on MapQuest.
