Jared Meddaugh was the son of Abram Meddaugh and the brother of George Washington Meddaugh. Thanks to Barbara Gage & Connie Keeney [descendents], and Gary Middaugh, I have quite a bit of information on Jared to augment [or overwhelm] my own research; possibly more info than I have on my ancestor, George W. I commented long ago that if I were to find more relatives on the Meddaugh side, they would have to be Jared's descendants; hi Barbara.
My family record [probably Mahala's] has Jared b. 4 Oct.,1838 in Blenheim, Oxford Co., Ontario. We found when we were in Tilsonberg Oct., 1984:
|
Blenheim Township 1851 Meddaugh
Abram
CW age
33 log house |
We also found:
|
1861 South Norwich-Erbtown |
Deborah Cameron was the wife of the local doctor. I don't know what happened to Mary Ann, Henry had died. We found:
|
1862
- South Norwich |
so Jared was listed as part owner of the family homestead; this was also listed as 1861 .
|
Meddaugh,
George - age 25
- S. Norwich - Canada- in S. N'ch |
The next
thing I have is from Norwich
Archives, Tillsonburg Observer as I recall:
|
Meddaugh,
Jared age 25 Res of Norwich birth @
Blenheim, parents: Abram & Elizabeth date: Jan 11, 1863 m. Walker, Charlotte age 16 Norwich Norwich parents: Levi & Pillone witness : Susan Meddaugh. Both bride & Groom were residents of Norwich. |
Barb feels that Susan Meddaugh was Susannah Johnson Middaugh, wife of Joseph, and isn't it interesting that Charlotte's [we believe she later went by her middle name Grace] parents were at the wedding of a 16 year old but it was a while ago. More about the Walkers at the bottom of the page.

This would be Jared; spelling was arbitrary.

So, we have Grace, age 33, with 5 children but no Jared. Gary found that Grace [Charlotte, remember?] died in the city [then division] of St. Thomas, Elgin Co., February 14, 1907 at the age of perhaps 60. She was born in Otterville and was listed as married. Unfortunately, the death certificate was not required to have her parents and didn't.
Also, I found:
| 008709-82
- George KAY , 24 , clerk , South Norwich Twp., West Otterville , s/o
Aaron & Jane , married Carrie A. MEDDAUGH , 17 , South Norwich Twp., West Otterville , d/o Jared & Grace, witn: C.A. MOORE of Springford & Grace MEDDAUGH of West Otterville , 29 Aug 1882 at West Otterville. |
Which would be why Carrie is not on the census.
Jared was in the 1881 census in Windsor, Essex, Ontario living with head of household John CAMPBELL who seems to have been running a boarding house. Jared was 42 and a Wesleyan Methodist of German ancestry(!). An 1882 Detroit city directory tells us that Jared K. Meddough was a clerk at the Tremont House.
William Alexander Meddaugh knew of Jared and said that he was a hotel keeper in Durham, Ontario. Durham could be a town quite a way north of Oxford Co. or a County northeast of Toronto; however Gary notes:
| "We are pretty certain that this reference by William Alexander, should have read 'New Durham', Ontario - a small centre, just east of Burgesville Ontario, rather than "Durham". Note: it is also very close to St. George Ontario". |
and I like this best. (Gary also mentions a Henry Meddaugh who was mayor and livery operator and hotel keeper in Durham.) I also have in my file a note scrawled with other snippets:
| "Jared Meddaugh Columba Hotell (sic) St. George, Ont." |
a location near Ayr which is just above Norwich; Wm. Alexander said his g'father, younger James, lived much of his life in Ayr. This is probably earlier; it seems to establish that Jared worked in hotels much of his life. My Canadian geography needs work.
Barbara supplied the following information: [it is a bit earlier than the above]

|
"A
search by Sharon Ferry, indicates her [Florence's] POB as: Tilbury
West,
Essex Cnty ON." And: "Our search of Ontario Birth Records 1869 - 1895 indicates that he [Everett] was born in Belle River, Tilbury West Twnsp Essex Cnty., ON." And: "Our search of Ontario Birth Records 1869 - 1895 indicates that she [Ida Elna] was born in Belle River, Tilbury West Twnsp Essex Cnty ON." |
Barbara has indicated that (Jared) Emory died abt 1922 or 1923 Detroit, Wayne Cnty MI (born abt 1870). Barbara points out that Myrtle was b. mid-82 [LDS' IGI tells us:"07 JUN 1882, South, Norwich, Oxford, Ontario"] but Grace was living alone in the 1881 census and mentions that Myrtle's parentage is in doubt. Myrtle's first husband was Clarence Smart with whom George W. or Menila corresponded when they were in California and Clarence was in Chicago.
Connie Keeney sent me a copy of a Detroit 1885 city directory page:
|
Meddough Jared K. clk. Tremont House |
Note that Jared's daughter, Myrtle E., m. Clarence Smart who we believe is the son of Jared's sister Rebecca. This would be a first cousin and marriage between first cousins was illegal in Canada [see Florence below]. However, this would not be a problem if Myrtle was not Jared's daughter [see a couple of paragraphs up]. This could explain Jared's change of address! I would think that O. E. Meddaugh, Jared's nephew, would disaprove of such matters but see the note below about O. E.'s second marriage to Jared's daughter. Also, O. E.'s father G. W. Meddaugh has two addresses for Clarence Smart in Chicago so it seems G. W. kept up with Clarence [G. W. died in 1906].
The 1901 Ontario census of Essex South, Mersea subdistrict, shows Jared K. Meadow as a guest in the Dring household b. 4Oct.1832 a Methodist with no profession given. My take is that it is SE of Windsor at Lake Ontario.
Gary found:

Now Jared's daughter, Florence May Meddaugh, is quite a story. The French Family website has her b. 1872 in Comber, Ont. [conveniently located 1 m. north of Tilbury West]. At the age of 14 she married in Sandusky, Mich. William H. French b. in Whitechurch, York Co., Ontario [by previous website, b. 1852, d. 1926 in Detroit]. By him, she had 8 children b. in DeSmet, N.D., Wheatly, Ontario and Hudington, Michigan. He died of complications of a work-related accident in Detroit Mich. She later married my grandfather, O.E. Meddaugh. The wedding took place in Canada where marriages between first cousins were not legal so she was married under the name "Francis Farmer". She seemed amused by signing her name "Florence Meddaugh French Meddaugh". A note from the local paper is included below:
| The first picnic of the season was held on Monday afternoon in Community Park in honour of Oscar Meddaugh and his bride of Lakeport California, when about sixty of his friends and relatives gathered and partook of a bountiful lunch after which Mr. and Mrs. Meddaugh were presented with a purse, also a book containing the names of the guests, by Mr. J. C. Smart. Both Mr. and Mrs.. Meddaugh thanked their friends for the gifts and the enjoyable day. ..... This visit is only the second one Mr. Meddaugh has made since his departure from Cornell, thirty-six years ago. He is the only son of Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Meddaugh. |
This was from 12June1924. J. C. Smart would be the husband of O. E. Meddaugh's aunt Rebecca. It would seem that the family did not dissapprove of the marriage. The first visit must be for O. E.'s marriage to Mary Emmeline Haycock.
Florence lived with O.E. in Lakeport until he died then lived at times in Napa with her oldest son Lloyd Matthew French Sr. and with Charley and Martha Smith French in Michigan until she died in 1954. [The French Family website says 1852 in Conniston Twp., Mich.] I understand that O.E.'s family did not care for the marriage. Also, Florence received a small monthly stipend from Meddaugh's Drug Store until she died in 1954. I had not heard of her until Barbara Gage wrote.
Connie scored again with a copy of Jared's death record: Jarred Kildran(?) Meddaugh died May 24, 1909 [b.04Oct.1838]. He died in Bridgeburg [a section of Ft. Erie] a widowed gentleman; parents information left blank. The death was certified by J. E. Meddaugh [probably son Jarred Emery Meddaugh] who was a resident of Amigari which is also a section of Ft. Erie. As with bro. Abram, he was likely with a family member at death. Cause of death was cerebral hemmorage.
From Connie Keeney about Charlotte Walker's family:
| Good
News! Went to the town of Norwich which has a

Archives next to the local museum. Couldn't spend a lot of
time
ther but found this great info: 1851 Census of Oxford County, Norwich township:
Also found Levi Walker's death info. He died 27 July 1858, aged 59 years, 1 month, 5 days. He is buried in the Otterville, at the St. John's Cemetery. In the book South of Sodom, The History of South Norwich, it states Levi leased a sawmill for 1 year in 1855. As early as 1836, Levi Walker & Michael Cain were recorded as living in this vicinity. Levi Settled on Lot 13, Concession 9. He owned the northwest quarter with his son Nelson, owning the NE quarter. Levi Sr. died about 1859, but his family stayed in the area. Levi Jr. was a pumpmaker at Erbtown for many years. It is not known where the Walkers lived, possibly at the south end of Cherry Street near the stream. Levi Jr. was still producing pumps in 1880, but by then was living an a 1/4 acre of lot 14, Concession 9. Found Levi Walker Jr on the 1861 census for Oxford County, South Norwich: Levi Walker, born Western Canada, 25, Wesley Methodist, married pumpmaker, Frame house 1 1/2 story ? , " , 27, " Adelaid Walker, ", 5 , " Alice Walker, ", 2, ". |
