Gard's Grassroots Genealogy: Mining the InterNet
Help me pull the weeds!
______,`!',__________,`!',__________,`!',__________,`!',_________,`!',_________,`!',_________,`!',______
These are my notes on a way to get more specific genealogical information from the internet.

    1. Purpose:   The purpose of this technique is to get desired information directly from  genealogy lists or forums.  I worried about the ethics of the techniques hence the following item.
    2. Ethics:       What we will be doing is bypassing the need to join a discussion group to get the information.  The groups are set up to share information and I believe strongly in that.  However, joining every group in which we have an interest is prohibitive.  The door thru which we will enter was placed there purposely;  however, an e-mail directly to the person whose contribution we find useful is a courtesy we must not overlook.
    3. Method:    I will take first an example of the rootsweb Webb list (or digest to which I belong as I write this).    I'm assuming I'm looking for a male head of househould.
      1. Go to:  http://searches.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl
      2. Enter list name (Webb).
      3. Select a year.
      4. Enter a unique search criteria (wife's maiden name?).
      5. If there are too many results try restricting (husband's first name?).
      6. Click on "full".
      7. Cut and paste useful info to appropriate file.
      8. Send your info with explaination to author of note.
    4. Other uses: Try the Webb forum:  http://www.genforum.com/webb/
      1. Go to the bottom of the page.
      2. Type into "search this forum" box: "Didama".
      3. Add restrictions if there are too many results.
