NOTES:
My mother, Leonora
Stanley, told me that the Clemens middle name came from the family of Samuel
Clemens (Mark Twain) from his mother's side which would seem to be Sarah
Jane Brown's side. At least they were all from Missouri. Sometimes,
names came from friends of the family also; I haven't been able to find
a link.
CHILD 1 Otha Lonzo STANLEY
NOTES:
Pension application for kids said he arrived in California in 1885.
In 1890 he was the proprieter of the weekly "New Era" the first newspaper
in Kelseyville.
He died of TB.
From Mendocino Beacon Oct 31 1903 he purchased house on Clara St. (this
was in Ukiah) and
become foreman of the Dispatch (Ukiah)
A note from the Beacon says: 1/9/04 O.L.Stanley, father of Mrs. F.W.Beach
of this place & uncle of Otha L. Stanley died in Anderson. (That
would be Ozious Lafayette Stanley).
On 5/3/1903 O. L. Stanley, connected with the Beacon for 7.5 years left
for Ukiah; assumes
foremanship of Dispatch. Place left filled by Frank W.
Beach of Lake Co.
3/8/02 son born to m/m O. L. Stanley
5/3/02 Secretary of excecutive committee played Ebenezer Goodley,
henpecked in comedy
"What Happened to Jones"
6/7/02 At school election, O. L. Stanley was elected trustee for 3 yrs
to succeed himself.
Norma says he was editor and forman of the Beacon for 7 years. He held a like position with the Ukiah Dispatch Democrat for about 4 years. He then moved to Lakeport as a journalist and printer for the Lake County Bee until he died.
My mother, Leonora Stanley, said that his parents went to Missouri so that Otha could be born in that state. She wrote that that was where his mother's family were living. The distance seems to be about one (lousy) day of travel or less.

My mother new nothing about her but
corroborated the spelling of Inze.
She is in a picture with grandma and some info from
obit.

CHILD 5 Bertha Olevia STANLEY
NOTES:
My mother said she had 2 daughters; Merle lived in
Yreka and Olevia in Oregon.
from copy of note
by Olevia Purinton Owen:
My mother, Bertha Olevia
Stanley, was a native of Humiston, (Wayne County,
Iowa) the fifth child
of William C. Stanley and Sarah Jane Brown.
When my mother was
3 years of age, the family moved to Lower Lake (Lake County) California.
They lived here for several years then moved to Kelseyville, Lake County,
California where Grandpa was Postmaster. This too is where she met
John H. Purinton. She received her education in the schools there.
In 1902 she and John Purinton were married. Their first child was
born in 1903 and I was born a little more than a year later. Just
a week after my birth my mother died. This was on June 24 1904.
She was twenty three years old and seven months at the time of death.
CHILD 6 Owen Garret STANLEY
NOTES:
Owen was born in Humiston,
Wayne Co. Iowa and Married Sally Risdon on 3 Nov 1907. I knew his
second wife Harriet Caig Stanley. I believe his middle name came
from his grandmother's brother Garret Lewis. He was instrumental
in my mother being able to attend U.C.Berkeley.
He went to high-school in
Fort Bragg being helped by his brother Otha. He then went to Stanford
(no tuition at the time; I don't know how or where he lived) taking civil
engineering. He was due to graduate in 1906 but the earthquake destroyed
all his records. He got agreement from all his professors that he
had satisfactorily passed all his classes and so graduated; he said he
was shaken out of Stanford.

She was born
26Apr1885 in Lower Lake Calif. She was married to George Irwin and
William Hayden.

Lois lived for a while
in Palo Alto; I think she died there. She had been married to Jake
Esau. I recall in the late '40's visiting her and her sister Jesse
when they owned a small gift shop on Balboa Island in the L.A. area.
