Please notice, I've fixed a couple of corrupted links.

My Webb family is an interesting and difficult family to follow.  They Probably came from England as did so many Webbs.  Even locating them in the 18th century is a bit difficult requiring a knowledge of SouthEast U.S. history and geography that I am only now acquiring.

My first information on them is in North Carolina before the revolution, when North Carolina extended west to the Mississippi. I wonder about the Rutherford location (west, just below the east tip of present Tenn.) cited as the Crown forbid residing west of the mountains. I understand that a this was ignored by many of the Scoth-Irish settlers of the times.  Still before the revolutionary war they were in Granville Co. on the Virginia line just north of Raleigh  (I feel this is more likely than the Greenville location farther to the S.E. cited by some references).  At the first of the 19th century they went to Kentucky, avoiding indian territory in the east of Tenn., possibly thinking they were in Tennessee territory. The Tennessee GenWeb project has [information on early Warren Co.]     (I think it is now back).
They are associated with several other families which makes "Internet Genealogy" easier; I'll indicate where I indulge in this and include links wherever possible.
The names Byars, Townsend and Womack show up early with the Webbs both as marriages and as first or second names implying that the families traveled together.  Later (early 19th century) the Hands and Jones and later Gards show up with the Webbs.

The first ancestor I'm sure of (thanks to Nonie Webb) is:
(Note: now I'm not so sure as some of the children listed below may belong to Merry Webb)

Rev. John Webb b.1740 Rutherford, N.C., d. 1800
    m. Sarah Byars b.1742 d/o James Henry Byars of Rutherford N.C. & Rachael Matthews
James and Sarah's children were:
    John Byars WEBB               b.      1762
    Jesse WEBB                        b.     1760 - 64  !
    Joel WEBB                           b.     1765
    Jacob WEBB                        b.     1768
    Joshua WEBB                      b.     1770
    Chesley WEBB                    b.     1772
    Rebecca WEBB                   b.     1774
    Julias WEBB                        b.     1776
    James WEBB                       b.     1782

The second son of John and Sarah's  children was:
Jesse Webb b. 1760 in Granville Co. S.C. (was in N.C.) d.10Jan1835 in McMinnville, Tenn.
    m. Didamia Townsend b.18 Nov 1765, Pittsylvania,VA d.1855, McMinnville, Tenn.

The names Townsend,  Byars  and Womack are linked with the Webb family so I have included links.  You will notice how the name Didamia and variants show up in previous and succeeding generations.  I suspect that it is from the word diadem, a crown or headband worn as a symbol of power. Another source says it is from the Greek "Didamus" which means "Thomas"; you choose.

My external link page has links to Townsend, Byars, Womack and Jones families.  There is also a link to the Warren Co. 1830 Census; at that time this took in present Warren, Marion and the inbetween County.  I can't guarentee any of these people are those in my genealogy but you will recognize a lot of names and I'm sure most of them are ancestors.

Now Jesse and Didamia had 11 children.  I have seen several versions of the family group, some pretty strange but the best and most succent description came from Jesse's will;  seeing this made a believer out of me.   YOU CAN VIEW JESSE'S WILL HERE.   As many family groups did not have the husbands first name, I'll bet this is the primary source.
Jesse and Didamia's 9th(?) child was:
James Webb b. 27July1806 Ky., d.2 Jun 1907 in Fair Oaks, San Joaquin Co. Calif.  The location of his birth is usually given phonetically but I believe it to be near Boonesboro. Fair Oaks is S.W. of the junction of Highways 4 and 99 and has been overwhelmed by Stockton long ago.
    m. Annie Jones b.Jan1808 in Tenn., d. 14 Nov 1891 in Peter's, San Joaquin Co., Calif.

James and Annie had 12 children.  JAMES AND ANNIE'S FAMILY. There seems to be a bit of confusion about the family but I believe that my list is nearly correct as I have taken the most believable parts of 3 separate lists and the result agrees with an article from the STOCKTON EVENING RECORD OF FRIDAY, 27 JULY 1906   on the occasion of John's 100th birthday. Two of their children married into the Gard family.   James farmed the area around Stockton for many years.  In earlier years he lived in the area of Douglass township known as Foreman's Ranch (Later Peter's).   I was suprised recently to find that, in 1865, James was issued a patent to land in Merced county in conjunction with Miller and Lux who used to claim they could run their cattle from Mexico to Oregon on their land the whole way.
Jesse Webb (the oldest son) married Malinda Gard in Missouri and came to Calif. in 1852 according to what I recall of the family history. Nancy, the fifth child married Charles Gard who brought most of the Webbs into Calif. in 1854.  The travels of Charles Gard is coming soon.   Charles and Nancy's family is listed in the GARD SECTION.
