1959 Yamaha YE1, 250CC Twin

This is my 1959 YAMAHA YE1. That's right YE1, not YD1. This is because Yamaha made "E" variants of all the factory's 250 twins until the mid-1960's. The only difference was the use of over-sized pistons, bringing the displacement to slightly over 250cc. I've never heard an authoritative explanation for this practice. I suspect it had something to do with license classifications in Japan. These machines were rated at 14.5 HP @ 6000 RPM. At any rate, this is an excellent, complete example of what is a very rare bike, these days. It's original except for a repaint and seat-recover done by the previous owner. This bike earned a couple of trophies at the 1996 Del Mar Concours, including 2nd place in the '50's Japanese class and 1st place Member's Choice.
