The Awards

To read a REVIEW for a book (if I've written one), click on the title.

Science-fiction has two "main" literary awards, the Hugo Awards (named after Hugo Gernsback, an early 20th Century science-fiction publisher), whose ballots are open to basically anyone who troubles to vote, and the Nebula Awards, whose ballots are available only to registered members of the Science Fiction Writers Association (SFWA).  The difference in the voting pools generally leads to widely varying winners each year, which is a good thing -- twice as many best novels, best short stories, etc.  Given this variation in electors, it should come as no surprise that (again, generally), the Hugos tend to go to works with a stronger "popular" appeal, while the Nebulas often reflect slightly more experimental or at least less mainstream works (though this is not universally true, and indeed, some years the same works win both awards).
