Poisonous Plants

In trying to landscape our new acreage, I wanted "safe" plants. I ended up spending many hours on the internet in order to compile this list (which is by no means complete) so I had something to take to the nursery with me. I thought maybe you would find it helpful, too. By the way, these can also be toxic to Dogs and Cats as well as Horses.

Common weeds of  California

Some are found in the arid regions, some are found near water, and some are found just along the roadside

Arrowgrass -Perennial that grows in marsy pastures and native grass area

Chokecherry - Perennial that grows in damp soil. Found amoung willows, poplars and alders

Locoweed - Flowers may be Blue, Yellow, white or Purple. Found in semi-arid and foothill regions.

Milkvetch -Flowers resemble sweetpeas. Found in meadows, forests, and semi-arid regions.

Poison Hemlock - Started as a garden plant, now found wild along roadsides, creekbeds, irrigation ditches, and edges of cultivated fields. Has been mistaken for wild parsnip, wild parslay, and anise (the seeds).

Water Hemlock - North America's most violently toxic plant, it has been mistaken for wild parsnips, other wild herbs and medicinal plants. It is a perennial in the carrot family. In new growth, the juice in stalk and leaves will smell faintly like carrots.

Lupine -Tailcup Lupine and Lunara Lupine are found in California-found on foothills and mountains in sagebrush and aspen areas.

Sneezeweed - grows at elevations of 1500 to 4000 on moist slopes and well drained meadows.

Copperweed - Grows along streambeds and gullies where soil is high in salt.

Ponderosa Pine  - needles may cause abortion.

Milkweed - Milk like juice in broken stems. Common weed found maily along roads, pastures and abanded acreage. Most dangerous during the spring.

Western Bracken Fern -all parts green or dried. Found on burned areas, woodlands, open pastures. It is found in sandly or gravelly soil.

Jimsonweed -Low growing pretty plant with white floweres. Looks similar to small Morning Glory plant.

There are lots more. Take the time and learn to recognize them. You could save your horse from illness or deaath on your next trail ride!
