INTRODUCTION

The S4 was one of a series of limited production, high performance Audis built around the legendary quattro all wheel drive system. Within the US, the only S-cars sold in significant numbers were a pair of turbocharged luxury sedans (and wagons), the S4 (1992-1994) and S6 (virtually identical, 1995)

These cars aren't what most people would expect as the bases for a high performance monster. First of all, they have too many doors (four) and seat too many people (five (seated in great comfort)). Secondly, they have small engines (2.2 liters).

What most people would ignore is that they come from a company with a tradition of fast, sporting cars that can actually be used for normal transportation too, and that if you attach a moderate-pressue turbocharger to even a 2.2 l engine, interesting things can result.

In the case of Audi's Q-ship, what resulted was the S4. Looking like a sharp touring sedan, it conceals both an engine capable of 227 HP, and hence 0-60 times around 6.2 seconds and the wonderful quattro permanent all wheel drive system to deliver that power to the pavement.

Apart from its phenomenal performance, this car is truly a world-class luxury cruiser, the archetypical iron fist in a velvet glove. Among my favorite features...
  • The usual power-everything, from glass moonroof to mirrors to god-knows-what else
  • Recaro sport seats covered in Nappa leather. Soft, enveloping but utterly supportive in a high-speed turn
  • Pop-out headlight-washers (I've got to get a picture of these things)
  • Bose sound system with Sony 10CD changer in the trunk
  • The neatest, most effective climate control system I've yet seen
  • Heated front and rear seats
  • Ski storage sack from the trunk into the main cabin
  • Idiot-proof dial-in moonroof controls

Despite all that, what makes this car special isn't the luxury, it's the incredible driving dynamics. Anyone who's not grinning by the time the tach hits 4000 needs to buy a Honda. Anyone who's not scared senseless the first time they yank the wheel at high speed, only to find the car track perfectly on course probably shouldn't be driving one of these either. If ourunning flashy wannabe sports cars in a vehicle that could equally cradle you across a continent in comfortabe style appeals to you, then get yourself an S4. You just can't have mine :-)
