  Eurolights

While nothing like as bad as the old 5000-series cars, the headlights on the S4 are nothing to write home about. During 1999, I had a chance to retrofit Euro-style Hella S4 lights, courtesy of a group purchase arranged by Frank Amoroso (the Don of the Colorado S-car Mafia).

Subjectively, the differences are as follows:

  • The Euros are much brighter than the DOT-spec units, even when using a lower-power bulb.
  • The beam pattern is far, far sharper. You can aim these things precisely, light up the road, yet run no risk of blinding anyone above bumper-level.
  • I, personally, am much more comfortable and confident driving at speed at night. What was once obscure is now clear and detailed, hundreds of feet off into the distance.
  • Visually, the new lenses are slightly more modern looking than the DOT ones, but naturally retain a perfect "factory" look.
