Bilstein HD Shocks

The stock shocks on an S4 are Boge units which deliver a decent ride, but relatively poor body control.

On the basis of cost, convenience, ride height and time, I initially went for a change of shocks without replacing the springs or going the whole hog to a coilover setup.

At first I tried Bilstein Sports, which delivered a wonderful level of handling but were frankly too severe on Michigan's torn-up roads. As a step down in handling but up in comfort, I compromised on Bilstein HDs, which are much better at damping than the stocks are, but nothing like as harsh as the Sports. Overall, a good, relatively low-cost upgrade to the car's handling.

Abt Sport Springs

Now that the snows of Michigan are a thing of the past (not much snow in the Bay Area), I've completed the job with a set of Abt sport lowering springs. The effects are immediate and rather wonderful:

  • much better body-motion control
  • more precise turn in
  • more confidence in high-G turns

and... let's be honest...

  • a much cooler, sleeker, nastier visual impression
