  TAP chip and WG spring

When I bought my S4 in March of 1998, its ECU had already been replaced with a TAP stage 1 chip and wastegate spring.

Since then, I've driven a number of other chipped S4/6s. I'd have to rank the chips, on my own subjective impressions, as follows:

1st (this is cheating...) HKS boost controller (see the boost controller pages 1, 2 and 3 for details)

2nd (tie) Hoppen/MTM chipset, Wetteraeur shipset

3rd TAP chipset.

For my personal driving style, the TAP chip lacks smoothness, and doesn't deliver much more power to make up for its harshness.

Still, it does deliver a good healthy wallop of torque, and certainly I'd take a TAP chip over an unchipped car, anyday.

K&N filter

Again, this was in place when I bought the car. It's not really possible to say whether the K&N actually adds any power. On the other hand, it's easy to clean, relatively cheap, and seems to be on the list of basic "must have" upgrades.

As an aside, I'd advise against installing a cone filter setup. Think where that air is coming from. Where? From the area around the turbo. The HOT turbo. Whatever the throughput capabilities of the cone, I suspect that the heat of air entering it obviates any possible gains.
