Veteran Coastwatchers Hurler Lights Up Maples Pavilion
Veteran Coastwatchers pitcher Mike Cook sent Stanford University's Maples Pavilion into a frenzy on March 10, 2001, at the Stanford v Arizona State game. Mike, who has been a season ticket holder for Stanford's men's basketball team for the last 20 years, had his name called to participate in a featured contest during a scheduled TV time out. The contest; sink 3 three-pointers in 30 seconds, and win $1000! As Mike prepared to go out on the court before 7800 rabid Cardinal fans, he stopped for a "good luck" low-five from Stanford's 7 foot tall Center, Curtis Borchard. "In retrospect," Mike said, "probably not the luckiest person to touch since he's had season ending foot surgery for the last two seasons!" But onto the court he went. Thirty seconds to sink 3 threes, take home a thousand bucks. Mike had "a little case of the jitters", shooting in front of 7800 fans, but with 4 seconds left on the clock he nailed his third 3 pointer, swishing it through the net to the cheers of the sold out Maples Pavilion crowd. Mike describes the feeling, "Almost like a Coastwatchers' game but with 7800 more fans." Mike, who has been involved in many building improvement projects at the Centerville Presbyterian Church in Fremont, CA, donated the $1000 winnings to the church's Building Fund. Congratulations go to Mike Cook for an outstanding off season achievement!
